What are the symptoms of gearbox mounts failing and how can I check for sure without just replacing them and hoping the issues go away. Also is it an easy job/whats involved? I ask because I thought I had a drivetrain issue and after a quick test drive a friend said he thinks it is the mounts not the drivetrain. He is always really busy so I thought I would just get on and replace them if they are going to be the reason but it would be good to check further if there is a simple way.

When I come off the power suddenly the car feels like it jolts back and forth 2-3 times. I thought it was backlash but he's saying no. It's sort of hard to explain exactly but the mounts only cost £15 for bearmach ones and if it's a simple job it might be worth sorting. Clutch need bleeding too so I'll have to drag myself underneath when I have a day off.

If your going to do the gearbox mounts I would do the engine mounts at the same time :)

Mine does that too if I take my foot off the accelerator suddenly. I thought it was just a Land Rover eccentricity. That's presumably why Discoverys often have rubber joints on the propshafts to absorb a bit of this unevenness and feel more like a car. I always thought it was something to to with the rather large amount of rotational slack in the average Land Rover transmission. It's pretty easy to see if the mounts are in poor condition - the rubber looks like it's perished, or the metal bits have separated from the rubber. Or in one case I had it looked like the rubber was dissolving in the transmission fluid leaks.
