Hi Everyone

So coming off the M5 in Devon and going up an incline on the A38 on cruise control.

As the car ascends the incline the revs go to around 3500-4000 and a huge and a bit dangerous cloud of black smoke is pumped out the exhaust.

Not only embarrassing but dangerous for those following.

I went for an MOT this morning and the car passed the smoke test no problem however the tech revved the car till it pumped out the black smoke, he thinks under load at revs the pump is over fuelling

Does anyone know of a good Diesel specialist around North London area who could sort this for me.

Doesn't have to be North London as I don't mind travelling

Many thanks

Ash

Could a turbo seal let go momentarily? Allowing engine oil to be burned - hence the burst of revs? Or do they usually go and that's it? On a similar note, are you sure the engine isn't overfilled with oil.

Hi Saint

Cleaned the intercooler about 4k miles ago and all hoses however the the EGR valve is always pretty scuzzy, what is the procedure and what is best for cleaning, there is a lot of oil in the plenum chamber, but wet film rather than black soot

Check the EGR valve. Take if off try pushing it in, if it goes in easily the spring will be broken causing the exhaust to leak in when it shouldn't. Black smoke at high RPM is classic of either overfuelling or lack of combustible air which a leaking EGR valve will cause. MAF sensor could also be faulty reading wrong air flow.

Yes I did put oil in just a tiny bit passed the upper limit, hard to say on the turbo, it does seem like fuel rather than oil, smoke is very black rather than grey......., it's pretty grim when it happens

Black is fuel oil would be blue.

Thank you Wammers

The EGR should not operate when the engine is being accelerated or under load. What gear were you in to get 4000 RPM on the road? 4000 RPM in top, torque lock is around 112 MPH. Right belay that i missed the A38 bit only saw M5.

He said he was on an incline using cruise control, if he was doing 60, a downshift is pretty normal and it will hit 4K rpm. Stupid box will often down shift 2 gears then back up one.

Yep i agree did not notice A38 bit. Exhaust gas leaking past EGR valve would be my bet.

Yes Data, it has been run down from London to Cornwall quite a bit so should be fairly clean of deposits.

It's a pain, as someone commented these cars are a hobby rather than transport........

In fairness it has been pretty good London to Cornwall and back comfortable and quiet transport a bit like flying Club Class on Aeroflot........nice but not sure you are going to make it without incident!!

In that case, I'm with Wammers, EGR valve stuck or turbo pipes leaking.
If you check the EGR, after leave the pipe off the EGR diaphragm to disable it, block the rubber pipe with a suitable screw.
Of course if the engine oil level was too high that may not help.

^^^^^^^^ Poor guy just rebuilt his engine too......... how would you stop that runaway?

Mind you mine is not unlike that, but in black!!!
