Is this true?

They have recently changed MOT rules, which now state that an exhaust must have the same number of components it was originally fitted with, including the same type of components, such as cat, DPF etc...

So while the cat isnt needed for emissions, it needs to be there for testing.
Same with the DPF's, all those people who had them removed to save money will now have to pay to get a new one fitted, unless they know a friendly tester
 
Diesel Particulate Filter, FL1 doesn't have it, but FL2 and all modern diesels do to cut the soot that exits the exhaust. They're prone to clogging and causing big problems, so a lot of companies used to remove them for a fee and remap for much more power, but they can't do it anymore

Send this dude your cat converter which has a significant value and he will send you a nearly worthless bit of tube as a replacement. Hats off to the guy - its a bold business model.

Not all cat's are worth big money, but agreed, a lot are! Although I don't think the FL cat has any precious metals in

That leads me to my other question-the egr blanking is itworth it on l series?, ive half booked in for a professional engi e flush at the garage where nephew works as theve just got a machine in to do it (they used to use the forte aerosol) and thinking of doing it once done..

When did these new rules begin, had an MOT done just before Christmas and it passed with no mention of the CAT being needed on my 300tdi Disco.

I have also heard of the new rules but were unsure of when they started so didn't want to suggest it. The best way now is to hollow out your cat therefore removing all the things that will restrict airflow but still looks untouched.

I have seen he price list at my local metal recyclers. Cats range from £2 to £400 depending on the precious metals. Unfortunately I had a boot full of £2 ones

As for EGR removal on L Series, should offer an improvement to a caked up one

Also, it only applies if the tester can establish that the vehicle being tested was fitted with a DPF filter as standard, although it will probably be pretty obvious to him that the DPF has been removed unless more exhaust sections have been changed. Someone mentioned CAT on a 300 TDi Disco - not all 300 TDi Disco's had them, so the tester would have no way of knowing even if the legislation applied to CATs.

I'm not sure what the experiences are with other people on the forum but the MOT test has got so extensive now, every car I have had tested in the past few years they have overlooked many items on the test - for example they are supposed to check the operation of the tow bar electrics socket if fitted but I have never had one tested... The only time I have ever heard of one being tested was my mate who took his Series III ex MOD FFR (Fitted For Radio) to Kwik Fit and they were using a trailer lighting board to do the test - his 24 volt electrics finished it off.

The trailer socket test only applies to the 13 pin European standard socket according to my info.
The exhaust has to have all components present.
The introduction of the full EU MOT still seems to be the subject of discussion in the UK. France and Spain already have a lot of it and any mods may be a fail if they are not on the homologation list on the computer.

Apologies - you are correct the electrical function test only applies to 13pin sockets. Need to check back with my mate and his story.

However a de-cat is only a reason for MOT failure if the vehicle needs to be subject to a CAT emissions test - i.e. petrol/lpg cars after 1/8/92 - not diesels.
 
I want to know why we are still buying all this EU bull!! I don't see what a trade agreement has to do with a cat or any other pointless bit of junk we seem to be forced to fit these days!!
