Brake lights not working

I have a 300TDi 1998 model.
The two brake lights in the rear columns are not working but the one at the top of the door is.
I have replaced the bulbs but still no luck and the old bulbs looked ok.
I have checked the fuse and that is OK too.
When I bought my Disco the side lights were only in the bumper so they did a modification with the tow bar lights (no tow bar fitted) to fire up the ones in the rear column. Could this have something to do with the problem?

I would think so as you have identified that the supply is ok to the rear, start looking at the lamp units the O/S first as that is where the supply arrives and then branches to the high level lamp and also to the N/S lamp unit.

Yup you have said the bulbs were replaced, but the brake bulb is twin filament and is also used as a tail light, the indicator bulb is single filament, it also has a different 'key' to the holder so should only fit in the correct place..

But has you have had this mod done who knows what has happened.

The brake lights and stop lights are separate lamps, starting at the top of the cluster, i have:
side
indicator
reverse
brake
all of which used to work.
Immediately before I noticed the lights were faulty I had my battery replaced, could this have anything to do with the problem?

Should be like this if you have the 1996-97MY tail lamps fitted.

Pehapes u should explain what the modification was, as I assumed it was the fitting the above lamps which is a poplar mod for the 1998MY D1.

i would assume the mod you are talking about is you have disconected the tail lights on the bumper and done a mod on the original tail light cluster to make em work. i e put a link in accross the terminals. if so. make sure the link has not broken. as already suggested tell us what mod was done which it will make it easier for others to help you out. allso, if you tell us where you are located,there may be someone near who could have a look for you.
