Does anyone know can you put diesel straight into the tank as you would a petrol version or does the system have to be bled (like the old days!)
2009 Freelander2 run out of diesel !!

Diesel & Petrol Powered FL2
1: The Diesel engined FL2 will never completely run out of fuel (unless there's a hole in the tank).
2: The Petrol engined FL2 can run completely dry in "limp mode".
3: The fuel level sensor in the diesel FL2 will put the vehicle into "limp mode" and run on only for a further 1.6kms (1 mile).
4: To prevent going into limp mode driver's should refuel as soon as the amber fuel warning light is illuminated.
5: After limp mode and the vehicle has stopped you will need at least 4ltrs (0.9 imperial gallons) of fuel in the tank to restart the FL2.
6: After restarting the FL2 needs to be driven for 1.6 to 5kms (1 to 3mls) before all engine management and monitoring systems have been completely reset and show accurately the vehicles status.
7: If you've driven into a full engine stop after limp mode you need to reactivate the system as follows:
a) Press Brake Pedal and at the same time Press On the Start/Stop button and Crank Engine for min 5secs
b) Release Stop/Start Button
c) Press Brake Pedal and at the same time Press and Release the Start/Stop button to Crank the Engine. The engine should Fire and Tick Over normally within 5secs.
d) If Not - Pause for minimum of 10secs with the Ignition in Convenience Mode (i.e all dashboard display lights on) Before Repeating action 7c.
8: "Bleeding" the system in the traditional sense is not required if you follow the above LR recommended procedures.
9: WARNING: when attempting a start do not crank engine over for longer than 30secs as a fuel pump failure may occur
Hope this helps, but never having run out of diesel when I had a FL2, I cannot confirm this is actual gospel.

Why DFNL would anyone want to run out of doozil??
Not necessarily "want to" but have you never practiced "fuel roulette"?

you have to be some kind of gonk to do it in the freelander 2, first you get the warning light, which has a range of about 35 miles, then when it gets really serious, the engine management forces the engine to miss on one cylinder, this still gives you a mile or so, finally it cuts out.

Thanks for the replies the reason i asked the question is i have a feeling the fuel gauge and range indicator arent working properly. I intend to run it right down just to check.I did 120 miles the other day and according to the range indicator started showing 292 ended showing 270!

you do realise that the range indicator adapts to the conditions fed by driver demand?
i.e.
drive with a lead foot and your range reduces. Drive with very little throttle and the range increases?
I've been out to vehicles that have run out of fuel with nearly a 100 mile range showing on the gauge.

All this talk of going into 'limp mode' is confusing, do all gaylander owners have this problem or is it something that comes quite naturally to gaylander owners?

That's normal , as has been said it adapts to your driving.
When I filled up this morning the range said 430 miles but I had been doing some stop start driving around town.
When I got home tonight after a run into London on the a12 ( about 70 miles) at a slowish speed of about 60 as it was persisting down I had a range of 450 miles.
