I really think I need to change my tyres if I'm going off-roading.
I have 215/65/16 fitted at the moment but want to go bigger for more ground clearance & better off-roading capabilities.

What are the biggest tyres I can fit to these rims without having to cut the wheel arches?
What manufacturer would you recommend? I do a lot of motorway miles so ideally would like something that won't be too noisy on the road but I understand if the compromise has to be to suffer a bit of road noise.

I have a set of alloy LR 6j x16 wheels. Why go for steels? They are more expensive than the s/h ones I bought.

What is a 'modular' wheel? People mention them, but haven't a clue what it means.

Has yours gone bald? :-D

I see that, but what does modular actually mean? Or is it just 'black steel wheel'?

the one in the pic is chrome :)

here's the dictionary definition of modular, not sure what you want tbh ;)

mod·u·lar (mj-lr)
adj.
1. Of, relating to, or based on a module or modulus.
2. Designed with standardized units or dimensions, as for easy assembly and repair or flexible arrangement and use: modular furniture; modular homes.
3. Mathematics
a. Of or relating to fields having a characteristic greater than zero.
b. Of or relating to structured equivalence classes.

A modular wheel is one where the hub is bolted to the rim allowing for different rims on the same hub and the visa-verse.

If going for big tyres and sticking with the standard alloys you'll more than likely need spacers to avoid fouling the struts and the inner wing with the tyres.

I've got 30mm H&R Spacers, 225/75/16 Cooper Discoverer AT3's and my own 40mm lift kit fitted. Those tyres are really the biggest you can go, i've barely 2mm clearance to the arches at the back on lock, you can't really trim the inner arch liner, otherwise you're just going to end up with loads of mud everywhere followed by a tratter's best friend, mr rust.

Thanks for the advice.
Spacers are next on my list!
Jus ordered a 40mm lift kit to fit before ordering any tyres.

When I priced up spacers and a set of 16" alloys (mine has the 15" jobbies) two things became apparent- the only alloys for sale were from the early FL1s so needed spacers anyway, and that new modular steel wheels worked out cheaper than buying the spacers never mid the alloys.. So steelies it will be. And they look cool. I think modulars in this sense are merely a style. I've had some from them before on my Paj and they are definitely 1 piece. By ordering wheels ant tyres from them (again- had two sets before) then I also save £10+ for fitting each tyre too. Win, win...

Does anyone know what are the biggest size tyres I can fit to my Freelander 1 16" alloys with a 40mm lift kit & 30mm spacers already fitted?

They will have plenty,,just like the answers you can find if you do a search...;)

My brain is over-heating trying to combine all the sizes I've read in different threads!

Is there a maximum width that can be fitted to the 16" wheel?
If they're currently 215 I'm guessing even with a wheel spacer kit there is only a certain width that can be fitted to the rim?
