Although the gear box contains 9.7 liters, when changing only expect to be able to drain out 4 - 5 liters, rest is trapped in cooler pipes etc.
(Thats why I changed mine twice within 1000 miles)


The transfer box takes just over 2 liters so 8 in total is enough to buy.


What I did exactly maybe not 100% to the book but it had a very positive effect: Got car drained off ATF from gear box changed filter, stuck in 3/4 a bottle of Lucas Stop Slips/Leaks and filled rest with ATF, also changed ATF in transfer box.
After around 1000 miles did it all again used remaining 1/4 bottle Stop Slips & Lucas ATF but surely you can use other ATF as long as it's Dexron 3.

Did similar change in my differentials, some would say its a waste but the oil there had done 1000 miles had sucked out old grime and was a bit dirty when drained.

Very important: Grease the props and U/J's, get a grease gun if you don't have one already


NB: My Gear box is as smooth as silk now, hardly notice changes, such a pleasure having to look at the rev counter to see whats going on

All makes good sense, my mechanic is familiar with P38s, but not in recent years.

Bizarrely, as soon as I got mine, another one turned up at were I worked, it belongs to a guy whose emigrating to Australian and his mum has been left to sell it.

Just reading up on fluids......for a P38a, 2000, 4.6L.

1. Engine oil can be any type ( mineral, semi/fully synthetic?) as long as API 5W/30, recommended brand(s)...need 7 litres?

2. Dexron III for auto gearbox, transfer box, power steering....how many litres in total, preferred brands?

3. Differential....EP90 1.6 litres ( excuse my ignorance, it has a front and rear diff, so double amount?)

EP 75/W90R Texaco multigear, that is the final drive unit.

4. Brakes...DOT 5.1...how much?

5. Other fluids....for final drive unit (Texaco multigear 75W 90R)...what to use how much?!

That is the Diffs

Recommended bulk suppliers?

Any 75w90R extreme pressure oil will do

Don't use DOT 5.1 use Dot 4. Nowhere does it say use DOT 5.1. What other final drive unit do you think you have other than the diffs? They take 1.7 litres each.

1.6 for a re-fill according to RAVE.

I use full synthetic for the engine, I reckon it's worth the extra cost and I change it every 6K miles. If the car was used every day I would use a cheaper oil.

Don't make a lot of difference you fill til it runs out of level plug. It's better to have a little too much at hand rather than too little.

The LR dealer uses Comma Dexron II ( £40 plus vat, for a gallon) they can get Dexron III, and same brand for 70/90 final drive lube ( though its not exactly same ie 80/90 they use) £19 4 litres.

Motor factors have Carlube 70/90 for 4.5Litres £25 all in and Granville Dexron III at £5.50 incl vat.....a litre......advice guys?

Getting stuff delivered over to NI makes the online GB based suppliers prohibitive

Unless you live in Alaska use 10W40.

Go to any motor factors and you can buy four gallons for just over £55

Engine oil bought, 10w-40 Castrol Magnatec, in ASDA down to £5 a litre from £9.....cleared the shelf!

Just trying to nail down which brand Dexron III to get, Granville, Comma or Carlube, based on recommendations and prices

I've used Comm fluids before, no issues....heard of Granville never used and Carlube similarly.

I am sure Comma started out by taking away used oil, filtering, treating and reblending it. Remember the Comma tanker coming to empty the waste oil tanks in the sixties. They seem to have come a long way since then.

I thought they sold the recycled engine oil for heating until the EU put a stop to it.

That is a common practice with waste drain oil in garages here, They get paid for the waste oil. It is filter and cleaned then analyzed per batch/lot, then the proper additives added and re bottled. Same as with atf, and antifreeze.

Think it used to have "Reconstituted lubricant" on the tins. It was half the price of new oil.
