Flat battery after 5 days

a fair few people use em in defenders as you can get two side by side in there.

Hi Steve, that's the one I was trying to find earlier, but couldn't!

I had one for my wife's Disco - it's actually 850cca/1000mca - it worked well but if I might suggest, you put it on charge for at least 12hrs before using it.

The one I bought must have been on the shelf a while and needed a good charge. Once charged and installed it was great.

Varta make good batteries but I would say that is slightly light on cca. I understand that this unit is broadly the equivalent on the OE one fitted, but in the winter you need as much as possible.

Well i finally bit the bullet and bought the new battery. Mine finally gave up and the starter could barely turn over.
Strange thing though...when i tried to start it using a booster battery it still wouldn't turn over properly so i tried to jump start it using my car battery, same thing..Bought a brand new battery yesterday put it on the car and initially very very slow to turn over again, eventually if fired up so let it run for 10 mins to hopefully put some charge back in the battery, tried again and no chance seems like a new battery has gone dead straightaway....Now i'm thinking starter Motor???? or does the new battery need a charge before use??

check your earths and power points first. make sure they are nice, clean, and tight. then copper slip/silicon grease them to keep them that way

although, once started the alt will be trickle charging the battery (do a few long journeys), but yeah i'd top it up first, it can't harm.

But an alternator will not charge the battery to it's full capacity it's not designed to.

Also allowing a battery to sit for a very long period of time it's possible it will lose some of its charge, which could happen if the shop has no sold that model of battery for a while.
Charging the new battery "off the vehicle" is not always possible, the battery is a road side replacement for example but then it would probably be fully charged.

Also a good idea to give a new battery a boost charge twice a year to prolong it's life and if you have nothing better to do then three or four times a year that's why I get my vehicle batteries to last 9 or 10 years, but then u have to start off with a quality battery.
I could go and get two cheap batteries in that ten years but for me that's all hassle.

you on about state charge? yeeeah, but that's a bit weird, because no normal charger gets it to 100% anyway.

i agree, if you have a charger, whack any new battery on it as it'll help increase the charge capacity, and it's no bother to do.

Many thanks for all the replies. Problem now sorted.
I put the new battery on charge, off the car. while that was, on i checked and covered all the heavy cables connections, including earth's. with copper slip grease, left the new battery on charge for a couple of hours, put it the car, greased the terminals, and whoa it started instantly on the turn of the key, once i let the glow plug light go out.
I have taken it for a run. about 1/2 an hour, when got back home i switched off and tried starting a couple of times. what a difference working a treat and is instant.
I will be using a solar trickle charge on it, which i used on the old battery, for when not in use. Tomorrow i'll be using it on a long run, about 60 odd miles.
For info i bought a Numax battery 1000mca(about 850cca) so hopefully should last, provided i look after it.
