Wondered if I could ask your advice as I want to get a galv 90 built to a great spec, my budget is 12000, 13000

I'm looking over a p38 today that has a genuine 18000 miles 4.6 v8 engine fitted, I can get the car for 1000 and use the engine in this build, it then got me thinking what other parts would transfer from the p38 to fender

Gearbox, steering box axles etc etc would ideally like to harvest as many parts as poss

Engine wise if you had the choice would you use the 4.6 v8, tdi or td5 this wont be my main car to use more a weekend toy to keep nicely in the garage!

Any advice is welcomed

The reason I don't want a standard td5 or tdci is they won't be galvanised chassis or bulkhead. Not that there is own wrong with steel td5 or tdci
I want it to my exact spec colour seats Masai windows mac 5 wheels tc etc

Simple question to ask you lot is what would be the most desirable to have?

Also looking at which company offers the best quality rebuilds on the list is high peak 4x4, deeside 4x4 ....

If ya going down that route then either get a 90 with galvy chassis or buy a cheap crap 90 and shift erything over onto a new Galvy chassis. I'd go 300TDi good for 75/80 and around 26/27MPG.

As you're gonna be fitting new brakes suspension etc you don't need to look for a pristine model so should be looking around the 2500/3000 mark for a decent body/rolling gear. and you'd still have plenty left to get a reconned engine if needed (Not Ashcrofts though)

Save yourself a fortune and stay away from any company specialising in rebuilding Landrovers. What they mean is we specialise in emptying your wallet. All the jobs you want to do wheels windows engine swap etc etc are within the capabilities of anyone who half decent with a set of spanners and has access to a garage and an engine hoist. Farm out the respray by all means but the rest is just simple mechanics.

If you don't have time or feel you can't do even that much. Then find a couple of lads locally or a decent garage and get them to do the work. But unless you want to spend 70% of your budget on Labour cost and exorbitant markup on parts, Stay away from the likes of Trek overland, Nene4x4 HighPeak etc.

Dont really know about how you would go about swapping the axles over as the radius arms mount differently to the chassis than a defender.
Should be able to do it tho, then you would be able to keep T.C and A.B.S

Give armsonae a try based in leics, specializes in v8, built me a superb 4.6 disco 2. Nothing wrong with your idea, the 90 in my signature would have a v8 in it if my son could get insurance!(pictured outside armson)

What Red says, you will blow half your budget on Labour if yo get a garage to do it.

When looking for parts, try to get them from the same place and do a deal on a massive order. You will spend loads in postage if you dont sit down and think about what you need and when you need it you will end up running to the local LR dealer or a motor factors for emergency bits.

Take your time and think/plan it all and you will be fine. Im yet to do a LR re-build but ive done a mini re-build and i learnt some valuable lessons. ;)
