Just pulled this out - looks pretty dirty to me - but I've no idea how bad it really is???

Going to give it quick clean and put it back in anyhow - just interested to gain some knowledge.

Yep. Thats dirty. The inside of your inlet manifold will be just as bad. Thats EGR for you. All that ****e is being ingested by your engine so the sooner you get rid of the EGR the better.

OK - See what you mean - I took the EGR thingy off!

Looks like it operates a valve by vacuum pipe on the top. The valve was moving which is good I guess, at least not stuck open, but inside is full of black sticky ****e. Poked around in the manifold which was full of the same black ****e - now all over my hands.

If I remove the vacuum pipe presumable the valve will never open and that will have the same effect as removing it?

I havn't got a blanking kit now so I'm going to have to give a quick wash out and refit as I've got to pick kids up in 1/2 hr

To do the job properly you ideally want to remove and clean the manifold and fit an egr blanking kit at the same time. I'd wait until you have more time and do it properly. If yer gonna remove the vacuum pipe for now you will need to blank off the end of the pipe.

All put back together now. Can't believe how much crap there was in there. Got right ear bashing from the missus when she got home - apparently I've got oil stains half way round the house . EGR blanking on list.

Cleaned mine out by putting the manifold in our old kitchen oven on full chat for an hour or so. Carbonises the crap and it brushes out. Should add I used the old oven IN THE GARDEN while our kitchen was refitted. Don't do this in doors or when the Doris is at home as it smokes just a tad Also warming it up evenly like this relaxes any stresses in the manifold which should prevent cracking.
