Props and UJ,s

I have now looked at many a previous thread and before i go and buy the bits i just want to make sure i have got it right!!!!!
First problem.
Clunk from the back metal on metal.
Had a good clamber around shook the prop up and down solid no play, so i am assuming prop is ok. Rear UJ on to rear axle fair bit of play on two pots. Other UJ solid no play. A frame solid no knocking.
So is rear UJ shot and needs replacing? Do i need to replace both? Have i got it right?
Second problem.
Chirpy bird noise from the front!!!
Prop has about 5mm play when you give it shake up and down, both UJ,s solid no play.
So is the front Prop shot?
So do you think i got it or am i well of the mark????

Ujs change the lot if 1 has gone the others won't be far behind

What do you mean the front prop has play? Is it when you try and shake it or when you try and rotate it? If rotating it and it moves then that's fine, it should move very little though so if its got quite a bit of rotation then you may have problems with the backlash in your diff. If it moves when you shake it then its more than likely the UJ's

depends where the play is.if its uj then it can be repaired,

if the play is in the spline for the articulation it could be fubar

When rotating it i get about 20/30 degrees of slack which i am assuming is all right going by other threads, when shaking it up and down there is a play at the join where the spline go in about 5mm or so had a good look at the UJ,s and there does not seem to be any play but would i need to jack to find out as i did with the back??

you should be able to feel the play in the uj with bare hands by holding each yolk...

the spline should be tight,pack it with grease and try the ujs again....

its 20mins to remove and get the prop on the bench.....

the rotation play is another issue...thats anynumber of worn parts

Pumped the prop full off grease as suggested its stopped a lot of the movement no movement when holding both yokes, could it just be a case of not enough grease in the prop shaft ie my fault or is it broken?..

Your fault I'm afraid they do need to be regreased now and again and its good practice to pump both the prop and the uj's full of grease after its been offroad

keep an eye on, the grease probably wont fix the problem, but mask it for a while, Id be looking at doing it properly fairly quickly, you dont want a UJ or prop failure, its nasty

to add, regular greasing prevents the problem, it wont fix worn parts.

Fair point live and learn looks like the end result is two new UJ,s and one new prop fooook...

Quick question what to do first rear UJ,s or front prop and is it worth buying refurbished props of eBay

if you can't afford to do it all right now, id do the rear UJs, £20 ish for a pair of GKNs with grease points (not all have, make sure the ones you buy do!!) and run without a front prop for a while, drive carefully and its not a problem, just till you get the prop.

No, not if your UJ is going. I ran mine whilst waiting for parts and the bearings collapsed and the UJ spider almost worked it's way through the yoke and completely knackered it. I was probably a day away from my prop breaking through and smashing through my floor!

Bloody hell only started clunking two days ago. Surely they are meant to be built to last not clunk and crash fooking hell. How the fook am i going to get to work.

You'll get away with play in a UJ for a while but get it sorted asap. Keep checking it in the meantime.

Cheers bede I take it just keeping a close eye after every trip on the uj to make sure it is not about to fall off I had a last look before it got dark and I reckon the rear prop yoke will be shagged before to long so I reckon it is new props front and rear fook anyone ever use lr direct
