clean the contacts with a pencil rubber could just have a bit of tarnish on the contacts. check battery for plastic cover

as you waited till it would not unlock you might have to resynchronise the key fob, i think it involves holding the unlock button for a min. of 5 seconds, and then the lock button for a min. of 5 secs, in close proximity to the vehicle, if i am not correct someone will soon prompt the right way.

Just been out and tried that but still no joy but thanks anyway.don't know if it helps but the red alarm light is flashing on the dash.my code is 4AA2 and everything I can see is saying it s all numbers.

I assume yopu have a Freelander 1? If so then when the fob battery starts to go flat you get a bleep on the dash and the red flashing light for a few seconds after unlocking with the fob and opening the drivers door. The battery in the fob should be replaced. CR2032. Then you have to press either button on the fob 5 times to re-synchronise it to yer Freelander 1. Fob should then work. If it don't check the metal thing holding the battery in place int split away from the solder at the side. Also clean the contacts as above and make sure it's gripping the battery, and the battery is in the correct way round.

Update-found out that the a in the eka code means 10.been out and done that and the car starts.however when you lock the car it reverts to the original problem meaning that if you want to use it you would have to input the code every time.can't believe that the fob is defunct as it was working fine till yesterday.changed the battery and cleaned the contacts.please help!

What year is the Freelander? I assume it's a pre 2000 update. Once you have fitted a new fob battery you need to unlock the car with the key then press the fob lock button 5 or more times in short succession at which point the car should lock. The beeping you had is the low fob battery warning so it should simply be a case of fit a new battery and synchronize to the car.
