My mate developed a brain tumor and had his licence revoked, so I bought his Disco as he needed the funds. I promised I would never off road it and didn't until he died 6 months later...................I bet George is turning in his grave now!

RIP George

hope you didn't pay over the odds, gotta be careful these days even mates will rip you off.

RIP George, didn't know him, but he had a disco so respect.

I bought my 1997 300 tdi because my previous BMW 5 series would be ****e at getting across the fields at our new house in France. Need something that is a big ol workhorse :)

I've always been into cars mainly fast modified ones and I've got a 240 horse Ibiza cupra, never looked twice at 4x4s and the whole off roading scene, my mate had a disco and I tagged along to a pay and play day and instantly fell in love, he upgraded to a fender 90 so I swooped in and bought his disco, 1997 300tdi ES premium 7 seats heated leather winch bumper steering guard full lift kit side exit exhaust roof rack access ladder 33" cooper stt wheels diff guards safari snorkel egr delete the list is endless all for 900 quid never had a problem with it till last weekend when it conked out and won't start again but it will live again! Wouldn't be without it now yes they break down yes they rust but I've never had as much fun driving a vehicle than when I drive the disco!!

In my opinion the discovery is the best all rounder Land Rover ever made , More room than a 110 , more comfy than a 90 or 110 in everyway , better off road than a rangey and cheaper and better value than all of them.

Oh I forgot the freeloader ( not by accident )

I have had Range rovers and comfy but more hassle than they're worth .

I've had 90s which are great off road and thats about it , a glorified van/tractor no good for a family of 5 .

Had a 110 CSW and amazed at how cramped it was , I could get 3 car seats in the back of the disco no problem not a hope in the 110 and with the seats down I could get a 2 seater sofa in a disco .

The 110... a sofa wouldn't even go in the back door , rear head and leg room was a joke , it was drafty and uncomfortable (and mine had top of the range exmoor seats ) ..and after all that the stupid price tag for less car than a disco ??

so to sum it all up the disco is huge inside , very comfortable , nice on a long drive and not bad round town , Very capable off road or in the snow and good value for money to..

Now the big question is , which disco ?? 1 , 2 or 3 200 , 300 tdi , td5 or TDV6 or petrol???

No idea where you got that stupid idea from.

The Disco and the RRC have the same chassis/engine/suspension etc etc.

On paper they are equally matched. In the real world, its always the discos that get stuck where my RRC doesn't.

I wanted a 4x4 and have done for a age. The Defender lacks comfort though which the family expect. I also think the Disco 2 looks mean. I'd prefer a Good Disco 2 over the 3/4 any day. Seems to have become a Chelsea Tractor the later ones. :)

I to have owned both , RRCs , P38s etc and Discos .

I have been driving off road for about 20 years on and off .

The RRC is a very capable car the last truely capable Range rover despite what idiots Like Jeremy clarkson says.

But then the Range Rover Classic is just that "a classic "

I was referring to the modern Range rovers (p38 onwards) so I apologise I should have made that clear

Still overall I would still pick the disco over the RRC

Bought mine as a sacrificial van to generally carry **** to the tip and to use over winters so that the C63 didnt have to get covered in salt. I find that I enjoy driving the Disco more than the Merc now, so much that when it comes times to change I'l be changing the Merc for a new(er) Disc 4 and keeping the 300 as a restoration project. I paid 1800 for it and over the past 6 months have spent about 6 or 700 in maintenence and repairs (mainly service, timing belt kit, EGR blank, De-cat pipe and a bit of welding) or about the same price as a service on the Merc. So I am completely chuffed with it so far. Totally converted to Land Rover. What really has amazed me is that so is the wife.
