Nanocom - newbie

My Nanocom Evolution has arrived today. It'll be the weekend before I get to play, but what would be the first things to look at with it? I don't have any (known) problems to fix, so I just want to poke around, look at settings etc. What are it's most useful features?

Any pointers for first use? Anything to avoid touching or looking at? Anything that would easily break if clicking on the wrong screen?

That's what you think when you plug it in your have lots logged do one system at a time untill you get used to it then go to another once you have masterd the first , ie don't run before you can walk

First thing you will have to do is log on to Blackbox Nanocom site and get your unlock codes, then put them in the unit. Until you have done that you can't do anything.

Hi Nick,
As defender300tdi said, go into each section and have a look around to learn what it can do and display. Read faults for each section and clear them down as you don't know how long they have been stored.
Don't think you can break anything but, keep away from writing anything to the BeCM until you know what your doing.
Mine hooks onto the compartment next to the clock to make it easier to operate and read.
Learning can be fun !!!

There will be a couple of engine faults logged but they are likely to be ones that can be ignored like the "vehicle has moved" one in the EAS.
If all is well, you should not see any fault codes apart from the 2 mentioned on a diesel. V8 might be different.

Do NOT change any settings in the BECM unless your are very sure you know what you are doing and always record any setting you want to change so you can go back if needed.

Yip in some of the functions you can save the data to a memory card .

You can on Faultmate, not sure on Nanocom. I find a pencil and paper is a reliable way of recording

If its like the faultmate, it will need to do an initial scan of your vehicle, the screen print of which you'll have to send to BBS before getting the unlock codes. Get this done before the weekend, otherwise it'll be a frustratingly short play!! - they are quick, but not at the weekend.

(That's assuming it works the same as the faultmate, sure someone will update if I'm wrong)

You can plug in a memory card but Blackbox are quite specific on type and size.

I started playing with the lights and windows just get the feel of it and get used to doing something then saving it and then backing out to switch off and unplug.
I quickly 'acquired' a stylus and find it a lot easier.

the nanacom has all the sofware loadad it just needs an unlock code for the vehicle that you paid for ie diesel thor or gems

No scan required as it isn't locked to the vehicle. As long as it is the right engine type it is just plug and play.

It all seems to be modular so things like the EAS seem to be engine independent and can be used on other types of P38.

You can save settings but sometimes it doesn't seem to work for me.

All the Nanocom software can be used on any P38 but you only get one engine type when you purchase. Other engine modules can be added for about £40 per type.

I am seriously considering getting one of these. I need one for a diseasel when i eventually buy another one. Where did you buy yours from? Also is the diseasel one the 'EDC version?

Buy direct from Blackbox Solutions Ltd - Designers and manufacturers of the best vehicle diagnostic tools. EDC Version? All the diesels have Electronic Diesel Control. If you mean EGR you need to check, but I believe it covers EGR and pre EGR on the same licence.

:doh: - I meant is it the EDC version of nanocom the diesel variant i need as i didnt know what it stood for lol but thanks for clarifying.

Yes, 3 engine type licenses: all diesels and the GEMS and Thor petrol engines.
