Stat was changed last January/February.

I haven't (and wouldn't!) used Radweld, but a previous owner may have.
Having said that, 14 months ago there was no sign of overheating at all.

It all started when a hose split. A local garage said the rad was gone then, although I didn't believe them.

The rad is more reliable than the stat. The stat doesn't like getting to hot and is likely to fail because airlocks cause localized overheating. I'd say the problems you are having are stat related. Just a thought. Did the garage that changed the stat remove the inlet manifold to do it? An air leak in No1 inlet runner could cause your running issue / misfire.

I don't know but I think it's highly likely that they did.
So the fact that the bleed screw only bleeds when hot is no sign that the stat is working?
