All of that work to replace the bonnet release cable.
Looks like rust to me. No doubt BMW cheaped out on galvanisation thinking "well it won't get rain on it." I remember a mate pulled apart the dash on his 316 and one tube had enough corrosion in one point to require him tearing it all out and replacing.

And that is just one of the 3 fuse boxes....What a fecking nightmare
There is a similar sized one in the boot and, admittedly, only a couple under the Elec bay under the bonnet....

One fuse protects the accessories which are operative only when the ignition is switched on (e.g., stop-lights, fuel gauge, and direction indicators). Paint all the tubes a nice gloss black and underpigeon could have a new 'retro industrial' look on it without the hassle of putting the dash back in!

Not that bad....no more than a typical Range Rover...just a tad more inconvenient as I no longer have a company car (wasn't using it enough so I gave it back) and the Rangie became a daily driver...He's had so many problems he needs every penny
