Proper Winter Tyres. Urgent advice Required!

I'm astonished that no-one has yet mentioned the most important thing about 'proper' winter/snow tyres. True winter tyres have tread made from a different compound. One of the issues with any normal tyre in winter is that the tread goes hard in the cold so cannot do it's job properly, especially at your lower, winter driving speed. Winter tyres have tread made from a compound that does not go hard in low temperatures so provides MUCH better grip.
However they will overheat if used on dry tarmac at higher speeds and will wear out in no time so are only truly useful if you KNOW that you are going to have snow.

So I'm still looking for anybody to offer advice on a winter tyre that will fit on fender alloy rims or who have used a different size rim and winter tyre combination.

Have you gone to the home page for the tyre manufacture? If you look they give the test results for there tyres. It is really trying to find the best compromise to suit driving conditions. I'm a cooper man and just love there at3 line and drive 5 months with snow and ice, basically 95% snow of different types and 5% where you would call ice. They preform great and have a 55k miles warranty on them. When looking on cooper home site they mention the different rubber compounds that go into the tyre

Have you looked in Germany? Winter tyres are mandatory over the winter months so you might find what you need there

I just typed '235 85 16 winter tyres' into Google and found quite a few, it's also been covered loads on this and every other Land Rover forum.

A bit of searching would find you an answer, a noob asking tyre questions will always get flak.

Why not just put a slightly differant size on if your struggling to find those?

Hi mark-d. Thats outstanding. On the face of it these are exactly what the doctor ordered. Can I get hold of it in the UK though?
Just done a search on the info you provided and mytyres have them. yipee!!!!. You might just have saved my fender from an autotrader listing. Seriously the reaction of the car on ice gave me the heeby jeebys. Should have bought that fiesta.

I think they deliver free in NL so if you can't find them in the Uk you could always have them delivered to a courier and they ship them to you

Thanks Lowlight. Finding that size actualy available as a true winter compound tyre wasnt straight forward, and yes I have spoken and visited three tyre retailers/fitters and they all said there was nothing available. Thats why I got in a panic and asked for help here.
A few people have been realy helpful, and a few people have been...... less helpful.
The automatic habit of ripping people up for asking a question doesnt encourage a free and open exchange of information. In the worst cases forums just decend into insults and slanging matches. its a slippery slope.
