Right gents the set I have coming has 20 inserts more than enough to have some fun so I am considering taking off the head I have just torqued down and re threading all the threads in the block and putting new gaskets and bolts on what do you think ?

Think i would leave the head on providing you have done it correctly. And just do the one that's stripped. Don't temp fate. But the choice is of course yours.

I just have this nagging that when torquing them down on second 90 degrees that they somehow didnt feel the same but that could be a bit of paranoia on the other hand the thread that failed was on the bank where the gasket failed and the heads needed 12 thou on one and 15 thou on the other !! so it did get hot

Yep but it was the second head that has the failure first was ok so left bank on ok then right failed but tempted to whip both off put a coil in all ten threads and another set of gaskets and new bolts which I have

I'd just do the one head if I was you. If the other is torqued down correctly then you're not going to achieve anything better by taking it to bits again just for some helicoils.

You also have the problem that you have to get the drill perfectly square to the block before you open the hole and also the tap. Any angle will not do. I have seen Helicoil drills with a reduced lead on them hope yours has that. Don't use a fast drill, slow and careful is the way to go.

I have a mate coming over to help who is an aircraft engineer and bringing engineers squares so yes intend to be very precise if nec will spend whole day doing it :)

I'd consider renting one of those pedestal drill frame things for your bench if you're doing a lot of holes. Takes the chance out of getting them square!

Be very careful with the router (I'm a carpenter, use them every day), lot harder to control, and see what you are doing. Better off using a decent drill at slow speed; set it up with a drill guide or do slowly with T-squares. Routers are designed for accurate use with guides/templates or set in a router table - so not ideal for engine blocks.

Is your drill bit rated for 20,000rpm,s. If that is your way to fix something, better higher some one to do it right. Did you check the dowel pin holes for the head??????????

Where have you been, and get yourself tidied up when you go jogging? Some body on here wonders where you are but thought they saw you jogging apparently, looking bedraggled. Or was "Thor missing and running rough" not about you? :D:D:D

You and me both. :D

No fun this getting old malarky and point noted on router and drill speed thanks for the direction have engineers squares but am thinking of making a drill guide will ask my mate to make one (he has all of British Airways engineering to use ) or I am workin BBC at moment installing new broadcast system so will ask their engineering dept will let you know what I use

Update gents Wammers uncle came up trumps with the V coil set :) well he was from Preston - new head gaskets and bolts so started at 7.30 when I got back from work took the head off with the offending thread and fook me 4 were suspect so if doing 5 why not ten had to say very straight forward took it easy with ordinary drill - variable speed - all done on one side 10 done all torqued up and have to say they felt spot on and hopefully will get a chance to get the engine back in tomorrow will keep all informed needless to say if anyone needs to borrow v coil set so long as you post it back no probs:D:D
