Never ever use a cheap 16 mm twelve point socket on the 5/8" head bolts specially undoing them, but also angle tightening them. Rounding them off is real easy. Always use good quality 5/8" single hex sockets.

Sound advice. I used an expensive 16mm twelve point socket to nicely round off a bolt head, which cost me 3 days and a decent single hex impact socket to finally remove.

Got to be 7/16" John. Normally they would have a 5/8" AF head. So don't know where his 14 mm comes from. 5/8 is nearer to 16 mm.

Sorry everyone I didnt mean a 14mm head the socket I used was a 5/6th to extract I was looking at the 7/16 14 Time sert and misread as 14mm god knows how it was a long hard day yesterday still waiting to hear back from my mate but will share as soon as I do I think they are as John says a 7/16 with 14 threads per inch thread we shall see also this block is from a thor engine converted to gems and I cannot find any reference to anything but one type of head bolt so was same for all

ive used both helicoil and recoil quite regulary ,both much the same, usually recoil recently as they are available on the snap-on van

thanks James Recoil seems easier to get hold of so will probably go for them if you have used them ta at last I feel as though I am getting somewhere will keep all informed

Thought you would like that as you said earlier you thought it would be a bit more but bloody hell thats extortion think it is Mr Helicoil

A Helicoil will be more than enough trust me. But set it just below the face of the block. Make sure the bolt you are going to use in it screws in clean, lightly oiled before you put the head on.

I think Cromwell have a place in Slough...If they haven't got it in stock, they will get it in. Caulfield are cheaper though and delivery would probably take 2-3 days from Ireland
Just checked and Cromwells have a Helicoil kit in stock for 74 quid and they are only 3 or 4 miles from here brilliant thanks for your help
