The word :

You are required by law to have 2 headlights that are capable of being dipped .
Other lights on front are auxillary , they can be "fog lights" , these are called and act as that by reason of where they are mounted and how and when they operate. eg they are allowed to be on together with dipped headlights, one pair of fogs only , and this is only in conditions of reduced visability. Other auxillary lights must extinguish when the head lights are dipped, there are no limits as to quantity and there are few requirements as to position . All auxillary lights fogs or otherwise must be symetrically mounted in matched pairs . The full requirements are in the Road vehicle lighting regs 1989 ( as amended) . Only obligatory lights are required to be tested at MOT . HTSH

in the seventies it was illegal to use spotlight bulbs of over 50 watts on road.... the 100 watt bulbs were always marked as off road use only, is this still the case?

Clearly front fogs are not compulsory - many cars don't have them, my wife's Subaru doesn't but the dip cutoff is so good they're unnecessary. Spots should be wired so they only come on with the main beam - that's fairly understandable. Round my way, fogs are used to see where you're going 'cos one of the dip beams is usually out!
Not to mention using fogs as a styling feature. So many people run with fogs on all of the time just because it "looks cool". I had this argument so many times with people I've worked with an even my old man whose excuse was "I've never been given a ticket for it."

More annoying than fogs in lieu of dips are highbeams on the one working light because dickhead doesn't have fogs, or dips. Every damn day on my way home I have my retinas melted. I've been tempted to leave my lane and drive towards him a few times. See if having a huge truck charging towards him because he blinded the driver will scare him into investing £5 for some new bloody bulbs.

its actually illegal to use fog lights (front or rear) if visibility is more than 100m. therefore having them on to 'look cool' is illegal and i do know people who have been stopped for it (though the coppers just told them off). it ****es me off when people put them on at the slightest hint of mist. i was driving in fog today and it occasionally got down to less than 100m but only for a few seconds at a time, and only on the country roads i was on. the dual carriageways were fairly clear, yet there were people lit up like blackpool illuminations! just shows how little people read the highway code!

Highway code no longer valid, indicator section has been deleted for a start;)

The only front lights that have to be aligne is the dipped beam, they all have to work if they are part of the lighting procedure eg side lights, dipped beam, main beam all other lights have to be switched so they are not on, on main beam perminantly whether they be driving lights on the roof or bullbar or in this case fog lights, there has to be a working rear fog lamp for safety reasons if originally fitted by the manufaturer same with seatbelts ect. So it doesn't matter that your front fogs are missing as they are not part of the test. And even if they are missing within reason it could pass anyway. You can pass a mot without a windscreen if you like as if it cannot be seen by the examiner it cannot be tested.

Simples :D

basically then, we have established that fog lights can exist but don't have to exist, or work, or work properly or can disappear into the fog without anyone caring or having the foggiest idea why.....

To pass without a screen you would have to remove the wipers and disconnect the washers first;)

ok, rear fog light/s

when "grey" jap imports flooded the uk,
there was a company making after market rear red foglights that fitted into the rear bumper, to comply with construction & use regs.
a must have if you wanted your vehicle to pass its uk compliance test.
still applies as far as I know.

did jap market discos ever have a rear fog light?

does anyone use them still on busy main roads & motorways,
or wait for the dickhead in a company car to like your rear at 90 miles per hour in thick fog..

mot tester and plod are two different animals ..... for example mot tester aint interested in 100watt bulbs in spot lights, but pc plod should be if he knew what he was looking at.
basically mot is a minimum safety standard , pc plod has a different rule book, construction and use regs?, which few of them are familiar with.

re rear fogs max of two if after 1980 vehicle , must be matched pair , if only one fitted then middle or offside fitment
