iv been thinking for a while to sell my disco 1 and buy a disco 2.
theres a x reg discovery 2 td5 gs been traded in at work. i have had a look around ut seems pretty solid and in good shape but has a strange noise on it.

i only had a quick drive round it but cant seem to get it to do it at a certain time.
it sounded when i started it aftef it had been sat for 3 days. then at slow sppeds coming to a stop.

the second fault is drivers window goes down a few mm then stops goes back up into place when.sent back up.

its got 99k on clock with service history. supposodly had a clutch last year but not seen.any paperwork for it.

its got not till april and no tax. there asking£2550 is that a good price?

thanks in advance

Looking around it, it will likely seem good. Look underneath, at the back see if the same holds true.

From what you say about the window, it seems mechanical rather than electrical, first port of call would be to take the door card off and see what's occurring.

Hard to tell what the noise you're hearing is though. From your description nothing springs to mind.

It's too much money with those faults.

I think my other half's parents are looking to sell their D2 in the not too distant future.
Diesel auto on a W plate with plenty of paperwork.

Based in Ripley so not too far from you?

Drop me a PM with your 'phone number if you're interested and I'll pass it on at the weekend.

Hi i have a 2001 td5 discovery 7 seats half leather auto 131k 11months mot tax till end of December 18" wheels dark blue rear legal tints remapped to 175bhp egr bypass straight through exhaust itg air filter loads new parts injector loom etc very well looked after but I want £3900 for it is that any good

When looking at buying a Disco II TD5 the single most important thing to check is the condition of the rear chassis. They rust badly and can look like lace.

Expensive to repair properly or replace chassis altogether with a galvy one.

fired it up today took it a 15 mile roadtest all seemed fine no noises or anything. looked at it the other day on ramp its solid all underneath its been a road car its never been off the beaten track. im undersealing my disco 1 tommrow so see how much it costs me in sealer and maybe do the disco 2 aswell.

Just bear in mind that the chassis usually rots from the inside out.

Excuse a question from a disco2 aged lady driver who pays the garage to do everything! This chassis rot has hit my beloved W reg D2 - the rear offside from the wheel area backwards and yes, it has come from the inside out. What do you exactly recommend to have it repaired 'properly'? I assume you mean more than a patch.
I bought it new in 2000 and I adore it!!!!! It has always been lovingly cared for and everything is still working. It is local Landy enthusiasts garage maintained and all replaced parts are LR originals and I always get every repair done immediately when 'something rears its head. So you can see I am attached to it.
It has now done 207,000 miles and still drives superbly, EXCEPT for this rust which is getting worse slowly but surely. I certainly can't afford another new Disco (pensions don't stretch to that!) and I don't want anything else - I LOVE MY DISCO. Hence, my question about getting a 'proper' repair done. What would you class as 'expensive' so as I can work out if this the way to go?

These DII TD5's really are superb vehicles if looked after like yours.

The very best way of sorting out this problem permanently is to replace the original with a new, galvanised one. These are now available from a UK supplier at £1850+vat, then you need to add the labour costs. At a complete guess I would suggest you need to consider a total bill in the order of £4000.

Rear chassis sections are now available which helps with the cost but they do ned to be welded in well not for the average guy.

Mine is having 2 new chassis rails welded in next week, new rails £245,new rear crossmember £215.labour for welder circa £400.
+ a few new nuts and bolts for tank strap and tow bar

Thanks to everyone for these very helpful replies/suggestions. At least I now feel a little more knowledgeable about the options.
I think that a new galanised chassis is possibly too much for a car with such high mileage although I have not fully cast this solution aside.
On the face of it, the chassis sections seem to be probably the better option for my beloved Disco in view of the high mileage . Although my wonderful mechanic is a welder, I would need to have a chat with him about his ability to do this work. He runs his own garage, having spent many years working for someone else and his reputation is second to done. People travel miles to get booked in with him but I'm not too sure about 'major' welding, although armed with all your suggestions at least I can now ask with understanding without putting him in a difficult position of not wanting to say 'no' and offering to just patch.
Thank you all. I am a VERY regular LZ reader and have had many questions answered for me. My only regret in being a bit too long in the tooth to join in all the fun!!

Have you had this done yet? I am eagerly awaiting an update as I think this is the cost-effective way for me to go.

Hi
not yet had done.have all the required parts just waiting on local guy to fit me in hopefully in the next week.
i had someone lined up who quoted me £400 when i got the car and parts to him it was a £1000.
my chap quoted £2-300 i can live with that.he fitted my new clutch quoting £160 and thats what he charged so i trust him not to start talking silly money.when the job is started i will be taking pics and posting.

£1000 !!!!!!! That sounds a bit high. I can accept £400-£500 but then what do I know about welding?????????????????????? Answer - NOTHING.
I look forward to seeing the photos and to be able to compare yours to mine.
