Deans Defender rebuild

As far as I'm aware the bell housing is the same on all R380 gearboxs it's just in a defender the engine is mounted closer to the front than a 200tdi using the LT77, also meaning if you fit a defender lt77 you will need to chop off the engine mounts and weld them further back, and you might have to modify the flywheel housing on the engine

There is a short block r380 gearbox. It's by Ashcroft and is the dogs danglies according to reviews. Considering it as a future upgrade

I've got a RRC one in mine and all is where it should be but mine is a 200 don't know if its different for a 300

If i brought an ashcroft short bell housing of gearbox then i would have to move the mounts to accomadate this.

Not alot has happened due to work this week. Cleaned the inside of my chassis and stripped the rest of the parts off. My chassis and a few other parts should be going away for blasting, protection coat and powdercoating next week, just awaiting on a price back.

Now with regards to a 3 inch lift on suspension would you say a 3 degree cranked trailing arms would be sufficient?

they may provide the boxes but they were produced by lr when r380 came out to replace any of previous still in warrenty that needed a gear box the short bell housing r380 is a direct replacement for a def lt77,to be honest id think a good g suffix 77 is as good as an r380 ,

Hi, have you considered galvaniseing your chassis instead of powder coating? i am at arround the same stage as you in a rebuild and have priced galv option at €1 per kg weight of chassis. Been advised on another forum (clri.net,I live in Ireland ) that defender 90 chassis weights about 153kg, so it doesent look much dearer than rust treatment/waxoil/paint.

There is an artice in this months LRO on P170 on galvanising a chassis.
£300 to get it shot blasted and galvanised, and they have a collection/delivery option too!

I did wonder if that was a knocked down price exclusively for LRO though, as I though that was pretty damn good...

Not had time to carry on with the project as quickly as i liked. However my chassis is back from being blasted and coated. Only one tiny rust hole appeared in the chassis not bad for 24 years of use.

Now to give it a lick of paint then rebuild my unknown axles and can start putting it back together.

If you galvanise an old chassis, how do you clean the inside of the box sections? It's no good having a chassis thats nice and shiney on the outside if its rusting through from the inside.

Hi i had my 100 inch disco chassis galvanized it was sand blasted first then it's dipped in acid to neutralise any rust before galvanizing ,all for a very reasonable £240 done last year.
