Hello, I purchased 4 x Defender 110 LWB Diesel 2.2 Hard Top TDCi in January. Since then 3 of them have had either their turbo hose split or the turbo itself break. I have contacted Landrover who are being less than helpful saying that they cannot predict what is going to go wrong. My response is that 1 is normal, 2 is unlucky and 3 means there is a problem!

I am not an expert in any way on cars let alone Landrovers themselves but I knew they were the workhorses of the industry and I cannot believe that you would have a similar problem in 3 brand new vehicles.

I would be so grateful for any advice or insight. Many thnaks.

just found this re the hoses.

Reference SSM43699
Models Defender
Title Defender Puma Diesel Turbo/ Intercooler hoses
Category Driveability
Last modified 15-Mar-2010 00:00:00
Symptom 614000 Lack/Loss of Power
Content
Issue: A customer may report a loss of power when the engine is under load that may be accompanied by the illumination of the MIL lamp. In addition the following fault codes may be stored in the Powertrain Control module (PCM):

P0299-00 Turbocharger/ Supercharger Underboost Condition
P006A-00 Mass Air Flow Correlation

Cause: The concern may occur due to an air leak on one of the Turbocharger or Intercooler hoses.

Action: Please ensure that the Turbocharger and Intercooler hoses are checked for any sign of degradation before continuing with further diagnosis and submit an ePQR with your findings.

Thank you so much. Am I correct in that they have known about this since 15 March 2010 (it says last modified on the info you sent me) and yet are selling brand new vehicles without having made modifications to ensure this problem no longer happens??

We use our Defenders for our business and these issues have made us unable to operate which is why I am pursuing this with Landrover (and because I had planned to order another 4!)

they could of very well changed hose's at factory with out you knowing about it. They work with % of problems before a general recall. Or the are sourcing a different supplier for the hoses for a repair. If you got those 3 at the same time could explain it ordered and delivered , made in secession

A friend at work brought a brand new 11 plate Defender back in 2011. (obviously) He never took it off road. Ever.
He sold it last week due to the following problems, all of which were seen to by the main dealer:

Faulty alarm after 800 miles. 2 visits before fixed.
New transfer box after 1500 miles.
Difficulty in selecting 2nd gear with "No fault found" at 2200 & 3800 miles.
Clutch changed at 8000 miles due to previous fault.
Gearbox playing up again - 11,000 & 11,700 miles. Different oils put in to see if problem cures. It didn't.
Rear diff 'rumbling' at 14,000 miles.

Vehicle sold in exasperation back to main dealer at 18,000 miles.

One of my customers has a new 110, badly made as expected:rolleyes:
What has nearly put him over the edge are the arrogant unhelpful main dealers refusing to take action(even causing damage to the vehicle on one occasion)
with the result that he has paid me to do the repairs as he loves it and wont give up with it

I'd be interested to know if this behaviour was reserved for Defender buyers, and their "good side" is reserved for evoque drivers, or if their bad manners is spread across their customer base?

Funnily enough the dealer who sold me the 4 defenders and to whom I went back to both to express my dismay at the turbo hose problems and request a quote for another 2 (what was I thinking?!) didn't want to help.
I can honestly say I have never been treated like that by a supplier. Landrover Head Office simply say they have rectified the problem and let's hope the 4th one doesn't break! Another query - is the actual turbo (rather than the hose0 something you would imagine service centres to have in stock? I'm not sure how commonly they need replacing but a 3 week wait for one seemed excessive.

If the cars are less than a year old they are covered under sale of goods act and initial warranty. If they dont have spare parts in stock insist on a suitable courtesy car replacement until they do. It should focus their minds.

Send them a bill for loss of business due to the vehicles not being fit for purpose. Especially as you bought them new for business use. If you have fully comp insurance use the built in legal services to help get things resolved - they dont just do insurance claims. Its what you are paying for.

Also get trading standards involved and write to Top Gear, Fifth Gear, etc. as they wont like being made to look dummies on national TV.

The technical bulletin in the earlier post refers too the 2.4 not the 2.2 we have sold a few 2.2's now and I haven't seen a turbo or hose failures but that don't help you. We did see a few hoses split on early TDV8's but that seems to be resolved now.
I think you are very unfortunate to have 3 fail I hope you get sorted soon and see some happy motoring. meantime get back to customer services and escalate the problem I know Land Rover don't want people in your situation.

I assume LR will have replaced these all FOC etc. The next thing to do is write to Land Rover, and CC a copy of the letter to your dealer explaining to LR HQ the issue and how your dealer treated you and that you have knowledge that there was a technical bulletin for this problem. Therefore why did you dealer fob you off.

If this receives a satisfactory response and your 4th defender gets hoses replaced (showing signs of degradation or not) and your dealer admits a failing then fine.

If not write a second letter, this time to ALL the auto magazines you can think of, now write a cover letter and send a copy to LRHQ and your dealer, telling them, this is the letter I will be sending out in 7 days time if this has not been resolved satisfactorily.

You will almost certainly have the manager of your local branch on the phone offering to sort everything out and take them all away for checks WITH courtesy cars left.

I suppose this is what happens when LR use a Ford engine, pathetically made units.

Sounds like it is not of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose,

I just got a 2012 130 2.2 and have had the same problems with 1056 km on the clock the warning light comes on and a hissing sound with no power under load I disconnect the battery and it runs great for about two minutes and then no power again I am being told it is the waste gate sensor

any news on what this may be

Thanks

hi there,
new poster, but am now on my 4th defender. Bought a new 110 double cab (2.2 Puma engie) 3 months ago and the intercooler pipe has failed 3 times in exactly the same place, namely the pipe gets warm and then the expansion causes it to touch the pulley and fails immediately. The pipe have been modified by land rover by stiffening wth some wire externally wound around it, but not working. The LandRover recovery people say thay have dealt with a considerable number of these failures, but Stratsones say its the first one they have seen !! I hve got to the stage of not being able to trust the vehicle any more, which is a shame as its by far the most rewarding to drive.
Will keep all informed of progress:mad::mad:

I was working in the RAF at Leuchars in Fife when in 2010 we received 2 59 plate 110's. In the military we are "meant" to do daily and weekly checks on all vehicles, but after about 2 months I carried out the first weekly checks only to discover the sumps were completely dry, not a spot of oil in either! I think if these checks had not been carried out when they were the engines might have blown themselves to bits! Not really sure, but could a lack of oil cause damage to the turbo as you described?

You say ford are badly made? On what basis is this, when i worked at a GKN company ford set the quality standards all others followed.if a company lost ford q1 all other manufacturers stopped new buisness until it was gained again.Ford were also the only manufacturer to make sure the components were balenced as they came off the press!
