Help! advice needed with engine swap! 2.5D HSE

where do i begin... first off, made a big mistake, buying a car for
cheap with no service history, first things first i thought id service it... oil came out was full of tarry lumps! changed oil and oil light started coming on once she'd got up to speed!...

decided to fit new engine, old one had done like 200,000 anyway and obv hadnt been looked after so got a engine complete out of a e34 525tds touring complete with ecu to drop in, having swapped over what seemed to be everything in the world, she wont start, plugged in diagnostics and told me faulty rev counter so ive fitted brand new one, now it reckons on cranking its revving off the clock... HELP!
 
Did you change over the FIP pump from the Rangie (I think all you need is the electrical bit on top - but best change the whole lump and have it retimed)...as the BMW unit isn't compatiable with the Range Rover ECU....
 
You cannot use the BMW ECU or FIP on the P38, you have to use the original P38 ECU and at least the electronics from the top of the FIP. Rev counter was not faulty just not compatable with the BMW ECU.
 
couldnt swap the pump over as the diameter was different on both units, so ive put the top half of the range rover on the bottom half of the bmw one, using original range rover control unit, whats this syncmate?

Syncmate - is a tool made by Blackbox Solutions....

The Range Rover uses a code stored in the BeCM and the Engine ECU - the two codes need to match before the car will start, this is to stop people transplanting a rouge BeCM into another vehicle in order to steal it....the BeCM has the tendancy to 'foget' this code, so the Syncmate is used to read the code from the Engine ECU and then write it back to the BeCM....

if they are not synced together - the car won't start.
 
right still not working, used sync mate and same fault, you turn engine over and it reckons its turning over at about 4k? have already fitetd new crank sensor, but what precisely tells the engine the rpm? just the crank sensor? or is it in conjunction with anything else?
 
also, as my old engine had the large pump casing ive had to build a sort of hybrid pump out the two parts, has anyone ever had the large pump casing machined down to fit the smaller aperture?

Crank Sensor and the No.4 Injector Needle Lift Sensor....
 
how does the needle lift sensor tell it rpm? does it work on fuel getting to it? as mines getting none? have fuel at injection pump but none coming out of the pump on the lines?
 
During Engine Cranking the ECU emulates the No.4 Injector Pulse to permit fuelling during the start cycle, once the engine is spinning over a certain speed the ECU assumes this means the engine is firing and then takes over the fuelling timing using the correlation between the Crank Sensor andthe No.4 Injector....

If during the crank you are getting no fuel out of the FIP - I can only assume the stop solenoid is preventing fuel flow....check the Stop Solenoid relay and wiring etc....you could try bridging the relay pins to allow the stop solenoid to permit fuel flow from the FIP.....
 
so why is it showing 4k on cranking? possiblity tht the new crank senosor is faulty? would this then make the ecu think it should be getting fuel as its running at 4k and messing it up? its logging fault code rpm wrong see
 
The tacho speed is controlled by the BeCM which is given the info from the engine ecu. The engine ecu is given the engine speed from the cps, so yes if the cps is duff you will get duff tacho readings and also the thing wont start.

Live data will prove the cps is or isnt working.

Are you using a sync mate or a Nanocom Evolution. If the latter, there is a bug that results in a static reading on the needle lift sensor of 3753.75 rpm. Is that the reading that you are getting?
