The Much Loved (and hated) Range Rover has been in production for 42 years (43 if you count the pre-production variants). Over those 4 Decades +2, the Range Rover has gone through many changes and Model Years...I won't go into the history here but She started as a 2 door coil sprung ladder chassis with solid axles and a 3.5 Litre V8 Engine....

Over the years she has gained 2 extra doors (4 if you count some of the Carmichael, Wood Pickett - et al - Specials out there) 7 Different Diesel Engines (VM, 200 & 300 TDi, 2.5 M51, 3.0V6, 4.4 TDV8 - there may be one or two more can't think of them as yet), 9 Different V8's (3.5 Carb, 3.5 EFi, 3.9 EFi, 4.0, 4.2, 4.6, 4.4, 5.0 S/C and 4.2S/C) as standard.

She was then suspended on Airsprings, and then the chassis dissapeared to be replaced with a tubular sub-frame and more electronics than the ISS....

The interior options list started with 4 seats and a steering wheel, they then added Air/Con pretty soon after launch, then came the velor seats (nice), then a few cows supplied some Leather, trees were cut down to line the door cappings and gear lever....

It all ended up with Magic windows that open and close using electricity along with a steering wheel that moves when you put the key in the ignition, the seat remembers who you are by the push of a button, the dials are replaced with a computer screen, there are things that go beep when you park, bong when something is wrong, and bleeps when the hour changes on the clock (that one took me by surprise until I figured out how to turn it off)....

They have been converted to burn an oilfield by product, to run on old chip shop discards, and if you are adventurous enough (no names mentioned - Zen :D ) there have been alsorts of motors shoe-horned in over the years.

So I ask you to please, without malice of forthought, with a great deal of respect to you all but please tell us what your Rangie is when asking questions, what year, what engine, what modifications etc etc......

It is hard to look back over the years and try and figure out which particular variant you are talking about using the little information we are given....

So please, I urge you, give us a hint in order for us to help you.....

Yep, I was trying to get it out of the velvet bag to look up some ones overheating problem and I dropped it on the cat and it smashed (the ball that is - the cats fine);)

There also seem to be umpteen year dependant versions of the AJ engine.
I did also forget the two different 4.0 and 4.6 Variants too (GEMS and THOR)

Well I do not know if this helps but i saw this no the M5 north bound just past the Bristol. Cant see much as i tock it on my iphone.......

Bloody awfull !
Saw one the other day too !

Role on the new model, it will either make the l322 cheaper to buy or more expensive when everyone decides the l322 looks better ! Ha

The engine list could be edited to say (petrol) 4.4, 4.4 as I believe there were BMW and Jag options in that size. :)
Yep - Datatek pointed that out and also the fact thet there were in fact different variants of the AJ engine too....

But as I said in the post - it isn't a history lesson, just a rant that we need a bit more information to better diagnose faults..!!!

Sorry! See what you mean now. It's a green 4WD so not exactly like this one but it is RHD.

Pretty bloody similar if you ask me. Are there differences?

Hope this helps.

The AJ V8 is made in capacities I believe ranging from 3.2 litres to 5 litres, the latter using thin wall pressed liners to accommodate the required bore size and is unique to Aston Martin. The 3.2 is made by Ford in the states and used in the Lincoln marque among others. Jag/LR engines are made in the Ford plant at Bridgend supposedly in a dedicated part of the plant.
The engine was designed to use nicasil liners. Early engines suffered failures of the nicasil coating blamed on high sulpher fuel. A switch was then made to conventional cast liners. I would guess that, like the 4.0 & 4.6 LR V8, this must have weakened the block.
