My 200tdi was on 174,000 miles :D Then I replaced it for another 200tdi :D Fantastic Engine :)

Mine's a 300TDI on 232.000 - Apart from a pesky tappet that won't stay adjusted???????? it's running great!!!!!!!!!!

Have you checked that the tappet cap isn't worn? Older ones are a better quality cast, whereas newer ones I've seen are like a pressed steel type

i have no idea how the votes are panning out as no experience myself with which to base a vote and see.
I'm not hearing td5 mentioned a great deal though.
Why is this??, seems the majority are running with the 200tdi though.

I think the reason most people (like me) prefer the 200tdi is because they don't have unnecessary computers and electrics, they might be a better engine with electrics on them, but when the electrics play up you'd wish there was no such thing as an ECU  This is my opinion of course, and there will definitely be people who will disagree with me :tea:

200tdi all day long easy to fix/pull like a train no poxy electrics and bullet proof
and good luck with your 4-5 k thats what you will need for a good one
mines a one owner 100k (just run in ) orange snorkel ,roofrack, chequer,no rot ,no welds and great body not bad for a H reg and no you cant have it ,you would need alot of cash good luck in your search mate

TD5 all the way, just buy a diagnostic machine then u can fix just as easily as any other. Treat it well and enjoy 250,000 out of it without a cough or a splutter. The question was engine here, and it's without a doubt the best.

If u think about it, LR spend multi millions on research and development each year. Why would they produce an engine that is worse than its predecessor! They're not stupid!

They replaced the TD5 with a transit engine

I'm new so my vote is probably well down the pecking order but...

The current 2.2TD is great - that said I've only don 1000 miles on it do it may go wrong, the 2.4TD was really loud by comparison, the 200 I fitted to the 110 does the job and feels like it will go forever, but the 3.9 V8 I had in the Disco (despite being knackered) sounded sublime.

In other words I can't decide but I do rate this new 2.2TD so far....

Just fitted an original 200tdi defender engine into my 90 that was originally petrol/lpg. Engine has only covered 65k and it sounds sweet as a nut! Looking forward to getting to grips with it this week!

1st defender was a 90 csw 200tdi - good engine but the head gasket went by the bulkhead - fixed it and then sold it :(
Disco is 300tdi with EDC - so lots of electrickery involved
My 2nd defender (pic in avatar) is a 300tdi

So................300tdi as i've got 2 at the moment :D
