Oil leak on diff

Hi I have a oil leak on the rear differential nearside oil seal can anyone tell me how hard it is to fit a new one.

I got the Haynes manual today can see it's going to be a big job:frusty::frusty:

Tis an easy job.
Should only take about 1 - 2 hours. Remember you will need a new hub nut and a torque wrench that goes upto 400nm.

Had both of mine done LR part NoTOC100000 (PT) SEAL ASSY £31.42 each last year !

you can do it without removing hub nut, un clip brake line and unbolt trailing arms.. will have enough slack then to pull whole wheel assembly out with driveshaft.. I did a how to, will dog it outta the archive

pic showing two bolts to remove:

Remove wheel,

Undo the two bolts shown, and unclip the brake line from the body mounts.
Should then be able to get a pry bar behind rear drive shaft and lever/pop out the drive shaft from the diff.

You should then have enough play on the shock/spring to pull wheel and drive shaft clear of the diff

Prise out old seal, clean all faces well, insert new seal squarely (tap around face gently with wooden drift until its home square).

carefully guide the driveshaft back into diff, make sure you dont damage new seal. its easier if you have someone else pulling on rear brake drum as you guide it in..struggled a bit on my own.

Bolt back brake line, and the two bolts you removed
Top up diff with some more oil..

There's 3 bolts to remove. The 2 from the rear of the hub going to the subframe.......remove from the sub frame as shown to the right of the picture.
Then there is the long link from the hub going towards the front of the hippo......disconnect this at the body end (top arrow in the left of the picture).
The rest is as joe says.
Removing the hub nut just makes the job easier as you can remove the hub from the driveshaft and the support the shaft whilst you get a block of wood behind the diff end of the drive shaft and give it a tap with a rubber mallet to releaase it from the diff......you then have a bit more space to work in as well.
A thing to note is, if the seal starts leaking again soon after being changed then you will probably have to replace the carrier bearing in the diff although you would normally start hearing strange noises from the rear when these start to go.

many thanks for the correction, I forgot about the trailing arm..been a year since I replaced diff and the woman's filled me head with nonsense since them ;0)

Many thanks guys the oil seal in back axle changed also changed the oil in the ird and gearbox once again thank you it's great to be able to have so much help from you all.
