Today i went to look at a 1997 p reg defender 90, it al looked good and solid until i noticed it had no chassis number, then no vin plate and the ignition barrel soround had been damaged. i questioned the salesman to find that te vehicle had been stolen 3 months ago from his house while he was on his honeymoon. the criminals had it for three months and then got returneed to him persumably by the police, his insuranse wouldnt pay out as he had modified it performance wise, He showed me a receipt for £60 from geniune landrover for a vin plate which he says takes 6 weeks to come?, he had crime numbers and letters from the police backing this up. I couldnt find the engine number due to not knowing its were abouts. is there anyway of checking he is telling the truth? has he got another stolen 90 and passing it of as his? i wont it to be legit as i really like the truck and had a decent deal at hand
Any help is much appreciated

There's a lot of people out there who expect an 'easy sale' without putting any effort on their part to make the vehicle in question more appealing to the buyer.

You could wait until he has the proper documentation to substantiate what he has told you but personally I'd keep my money in my pocket and walk away, I smell a rat here - waaaaay too much risk involved.

Don't forget that 90s are popular with thieves and there's quite a few stolen or cloned ones out there on the open market - thorough ID checks prior to purchase are your responsibility but there are plenty of kosher ones out there for sale ;)

Depends how much you want it. If it really is a good deal, it's worth a couple of quid for an HPI check, and a couple of calls to insurance and police.

It sounds dodgy, but not everything necessarily is.

Well I've spoke to him again. He has all the police records and everything. He has all the proof that the police returned the vehicle and names of police ect. He's sending me it through and am goin to have a good look through and make some phone calls

He obviously wants shot. If it does turn out legit go in with a well low offer. Its gonna cost you to get those bits sorted

A VERY low offer because this is the sort of thing that can cause you trouble in the future. You can almost guarantee that there's at least one clone of this out there somewhere and if it ever gets any attention you're going to be dragged in; smash, speed camera, congestion charge, petrol station drive off etc. etc.

Submit a vehicle identity check (VIC) application form (VIC1) : Directgov - Do it online

Get a VOSA ID check done we had to do our old Mondeo, was a Cat D write-off, costs about £45, done at a VOSA depot, you can chose.

They are very helpful.:D Good luck

Well I got intouch with the man. He gave me lots of info and emailed me a ton of emails between him and the police which prove everu thing possible including the police names numbers and badge numbers :) so Im picking it up on Tuesday hopefully :)
Cheers again for the advise

you dont need a vic check with a cat d write off, BUT you do with a cat c to get the log book (v5c) for that car,did you do yours for piece of mind?

OP,
if your realy interested in the 90 phone the police and do an hpi check, find out what you would have to pay for a car with i.d then half it at least cause you wont be able to sell it,personaly i would run a mile theres loads for sale.

Go to land rover an ask them for the print out for the axel ,gearbox, chassis an dub iron numbers an check them yourself also check the year the chassis was made behind the hexagon shaped hole behind the o/s or n/s front wheel

Job done no messing an no doubt

I've checked and double checked, cross referenced ect all good :) and no its not from barnsley, there int many straight landies around here lol
