Has anyone recently bought a new gearbox as above? Friend's car is dead and needs new box. I'm wondering if he should go directly to a ZF dealer or to a BMW parts place or do the normal LR dealers (Paddocks, Island etc) carry it too? Also if someone has an idea of price please.

As not in the UK its hard to do any legwork so any advice most appreciated and I will post a smiley with an electronic cup of tea!

Look at Ashcroft Transmissions site.

What year is your friend's Range Rover? Pre-'06 V8s use the 5HP24 and for '06MY onwards it's the 6HP26 (now the 6HP28).

For example, the 5HP24 comes in 27 different variants only one of which (the 032 model) fits the L322. A box for a BMW (even a X5) or Jaguar will not fit.

Saying the gearbox is 'dead' implies that it can't be repaired. That just isn't the case - they are dead easy to fix. Is it really necessary to buy a new one?

Hi Tony, have sent an email to Ashcrofts just in case.

Bemble I agree that "dead" is too broad a term but given the car lives in Bangladesh (where I spend 6 months of the year for work - Germany is home) its unlikely that they'll find anyone competent to do a stripdown repair. I've seen your offer in another thread, its fantastic but the logistics and cost of getting the gearbox to you and then back would probably not make it worth it.

So still on the lookout for where one might be able to order a brand new box. Anyone?

Edit: Its an 04 so it would be the ZF-5HP24-032 from what I gather.

I should definitely get a quote from Land Rover. I don’t know if it’s still the case but they had dropped the price of their service exchange 5HP24 to under £2000. Although they say the replacement transmission is remanufactured they are actually new units (via ZF UK and Desford) but they just want an excuse to get the old transmission back to keep them out of the marketplace. Is it impractical for you to exchange the old transmission?

If a remanufactured unit is good enough I can definitely vouch for this one, because I rebuilt it myself for the guy that’s selling it :
RANGEROVER L322 4.4 5 SPEED ZF AUTOBOX 12 MONTH W/TEE on eBay (end time 05-Apr-11 20:26:13 BST)

The price is a bit steeper than I would have asked, however……

I did one last week, cant remember the exact price, but it was £1600 something plus Vat retail - with good discount to me from LR.Two cans of Dr tranny squirted through the cooler is good insurance too.

Flushing is a must ashcrofts do do them but they are not cheap I have used a firm in Newark and they do a remove and install service and a collection service was impressed with the job they did too

Hi Guys,

I have a '03 L322 TDV6, and need an auto gearbox. The car jerks a great deal when gearing down. Any ideas on a possible fix? The Landy guys here in Kenya suggest a new box, but I feel there must be something that can be done. Anyone with some tips or ideas on how to get this sorted? Is there a 'repair kit' for this gearbox? The car still drives despite the harsh gearing down.

Many thanks in advance.

I'm willing to bet that you haven't :) - it's either a TD6 or a V8.

Assuming it's a diesel then your transmission is a General Motors 5L40-E unit and not a ZF one. The transmission was also commonly used by BMW so you may be able to find a BMW mechanic with some experience of fixing your 5L40-E?
