Hello, looking for my 1st 4x4

Hi folks

I'm looking to buy my 1st Rangerover this year & thought here would be a good place to start getting a feel for them. Always best to start with the owners clubs. You guys generally know ur stuff.

Never owned a 4x4 & always fancied one. I've got an old RX7 & an old M3 so I'm no stranger to low mpg toys.

Got my eye on the rangie classics in the For Sale section.

Good place to start, or is a cheap P38 the way to go?

Go for loads of test drives you may find that although you want a 4x4 you might not like the way they drive, then research known faults etc

I asked about a P38 on here a while back, along the lines of 'is there one with fewer problems?'

The anwer wasn't encouraging, 'none of them work right'.....

That ^^ might be a disgruntled Disco owner mind you, they get upset that their cars don't come with any mod cons, like butlers

the biggest prob with pee38s is people think they are getting a lot of car for there money

when in reality your just getting a lot of problems for your money

Freelander Td4 in the family here.

Don't get me wrong, it has its problems, but they are all manageable or repairable by a half competent home mechanic (me in our case).

With the P38 you HAVE to own a laptop with the right software on it if you want a fighting chance of fixing the problems yourself, plug it in, run the diagnostics and then do the detective work based on the diagnostics report.

There are a few threads on here about diagnosing faults on the P38, a quick search will give you the detail behind my comments

As to what folk drive it ranges from Daewoo Mtiz to actual Range Rovers

the p38s are trouble. Classics are great but not many gooduns left.Whats ya budget?

Well Im at the lower end of the market. I certainly don't have 10k to chuck at a minter (or a decent landie). Hence the interest in older classics, that & I used to lust after them in my youth. £1500ish budget

Well that was me being ironic old bean. Folk on here didn't seem too full of love for the Disco or RRover. I was a little surprised considering where we are.

you wont get a great classic for 1500 quid, theyre going up in price as they are getting rarer unless there in need of some tlc. mine was cheep and used n abused off road.NICE ENOUGH TO DRIVE THOUGH, AND OK INSIDE.Random caps again.

Found a classic Vogue V8 with 86k locally. Already had the 2" lift kit & tubular bumpers etc. told its not been off-roaded yet. Got a few dented panels tho so not sure I believe that. Going for £1500.

You will get a half decent disco for two grand. If Land Rovers were so unbelievably reliable we wouldn't need a forum quite like this one.

Buyin a land rover is not so much purchasing a conveyance.... as buying into a way of life - an oily one at that!
