Lost all drive, without DiffLock

Ok so its a 95 300tdi, 2" lift, 235/85/16 M/Ts all round, winch and bumpers to suit front and back plus rock sliders, I have had it about 4 months and drive it hard off road every weekend as its all free here

today was out playing in the mud and snow and had to pull out a pal in his long wheel base Patrol from a wet hole, as i was tugging at the kinetic for the third time i heard a nasty cracking/snapping sound from the front nearside, once he was out i proceeded to drive slowly out of the forest in difflock as it was either 5 inch snow or 12 inch mud all the way out, once out i released difflock and sure enough no drive.

whilst coming out through the trees on lock to the left there was the ominous sound of a fecked CV and intermittent drive and grip from the front nearside wheel then nothing then crunching then nothing and so on and so on for about 2 miles, i had to force it home on difflock for another 10 miles or so,

So i know its fecked but my question is, will it definitely be a 24 spline cv i need?

it is a 300tdi but its an early one at 95, i really want to order one tonight so i have it for tuesday the latest as the weather is forecast to be down to -20 here soon and the disco comes into its own when the real snow starts to fall.

Any input appreciated, even the inevitable **** taking, gonna strip it down in the morning and check it is just the CV thats gone, and yes i have done a :search: FFS thanks, just want to hear what folks have to say on the subject.

what do you want to know ,you may just need cv (stc3051 now tdj000010)it may have damaged swivel housing

Thats the answer i was looking for James, thank you, i have priced up the TDJ000010 both G and non G, Genuine hardy spicer over a 1000 zloty non g 108 zloty now at 5 zl to the quid i think non is the way forward, just wanted conformation it was indeed the 24 spline and the right part number.

If the housing was damaged wouldnt i see an oil leak or something visible, if it aint leaking then its fine with me, bet it looks shocking in there, like a bombs gone off in a ball bearing factory

i will know in the morning, just got to make space in the mother in laws garage, let the tyres down, slot in the disco, jack it up, stick the stands under, pull off the hub and start unbolting stuff

This happend to me one very load noise,then no drive without the diff lock on. having checked both drive shafts the and all round the wheel sides, then checked the diff out. it was well f*****d. put replacement in and now its all good

Well Vinnie i think we have something else in common then mate, just stripped out the drive shafts after taking the hubs off(good job really one side has been getting a bit wet so bearings needed doing anyway) both CVs are in good nick, both driveshafts are good, went to drain the diff to check the colour of the oil and look for bits and found the level filler plug bashed half out from inside, sticking out at 45 degrees, im fairly confident that it might just be a bit fubar in there, the diff casing looks like its taken a bit of a beating from the inside too, bulging out on the right as you look from the front.

Typically its belting it down with snow now too and i have to use my town car instead of the bloody disco, gutted, oh well time to start looking for a replacement diff, or maybe even a complete axle if i can find one for good money, depends on the amount of damage to the casing i suppose

I have to say rolling a complete axle in and out is better than trying to lift and slid the 1/2 shafts back in.

I was driving it for about 1 month (160 miles).this caused loads of damage, in the end the difff case needed to be welded as the crown gear smashed into it. 60% of the teeth had been stripped off, a complete mess.

I was told damaged was caused by the diff lock being engaged without traction on the drive. Then it gets some and over time the stress causes this prob.

sounds about right, I was being a **** at the weekend playing in mud and snow and basically spinning up the wheels with diff lock on and digging holes to make a track a bit more challenging, all my own fault, gutted now though.

Things may be different in Poland but there's not many places where you can deliberately rip up the ground to make it more 'challenging' without upsetting a damn site more peeps than a few bobblies

35% less people than the uk and 40% more land mass and lots of common land, off roading is getting big here now so i reckon only a few more years before they start with some of the same stuff as the uk, re restricting vehicular access to common land but right now, if it isnt private and there isnt a gate then its fair game.

its all about peoples connection with the outdoors here, so if you want to drive up the mountains, do it but dont come crying to the state when you get hurt/killed or stranded.

The place i was at this weekend is only about 7 or 8 miles away, its an old state sand pit/mine and is used every weekend by quads/bikes and 4x4s it also happens to back on to some national forest with plenty of tracks that are pretty rough to say the least.

Sounds idyllic Could be time to get organised and put some voluntary regs in place before they get imposed and you end up in the same bureaucratic mess as us

Right another little issue with my now defunct diff, i havent pulled it apart yet but due to some deforming of the diff case and the filler plug being pushed out and the threads stripped im guessing its well fubarred, my question is what to do with the filler plug threads?
can i just weld something on the outside with the same thread?

yes as long as you dont alter level by any great degree ,which you wont it be fine ,bit of poor luck

So i took the diff out today and in my humble opinion it is indeed ****ed

and look at the bloody weather, and yes the citroen is mine, yes i like it, but i would still rather be driving my Disco

so opinions please, repair or replace? i can get a rebuild kit and crack on or i could just buy a used one, about the same money but obviously time is of the essence
