How to start an engine in winter

course if ya built a proper insulated garage wif some heaters in there wouldnt be a problem






till next winter when its full of "stuff" that cant be left outside
 
i put our "garage" up about twenty years ago.... temporarily stored some timber in it.... theres never been space for a vehicle in it since

What with winter approaching, does anyone have any advice about starting diesels on cold mornings?

I was hoping there might be someone on LZ who was taught his engine knowledge on diesel marine engines so he knows how a fuel rail and a helical works.

Are the engines supposed to start in Winter?

I had always thought that Landies were parked up and looking good over winter, so that people would think that we were all roughty toughty off-roaders, allowing them to admire our deteriorating pride and joy!

If the engine is supposed to start, does that mean that we should expect the rest of it to work as well??

OK that's going a bit too far!!! It should have read, '... does that mean that we should expect at least some of the rest of it to work as well??'

Where's me starting handle?

I haven't had any trouble yet starting my '06 TD5 110, but after reading this post I thought better safe than sorry.

The wife is currently knitting a little jacket for the battery (with mittens on a string for when it's really cold), and luckily the dog bed is just the right size to fit over the engine. After all I've never had trouble starting the dog when it's cold so her bed must be good.

I printed out the post and nipped out for a test run. One thing I can't really get my head round is how to turn the key without touching anything. In the end I used a hanky to hold the key. Probably not ideal, but I'll keep working on that bit.

Next challenge was turning the engine over once the light went out. Finally managed it with a bit of help from a crow bar and the wife. Is it bad that all the oil poured out?

Anyway, I pushed in the clutch and heard some loud bangs and a few bits dropped off the open end of the gearbox.

So I turn the key and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Read this last night and woke the missus up I laughed so hard!
 
Wow, 118 posts and I am still not sure how to start my Landrover in the winter or what to buy for it.

I phoned Paddocks earlier and they couldnt seem to help me either, am now totally confused and distraught and considering psychological help. Think I might take up metal detecting seems simpler and safer.
