p38 dse cuts out when driving

my 98 p38 dse i have no problems at all runs great start from cold no problem starts from hot no problem,but noticed the other day while driving along at approx 20-25 mph in side roads and take my foot off the throttle and engine cuts out only does this once a day over a 12 mile round trip idle on tick over great at approx 800rpm. when cuts out i sill have all my ignition lights on and radio stays on.will start straight away off key again and then have no probs on my journey only started doing this over the last few days

Get the fault codes read, could be crank sensor or needle lift sensor.
 
d this trouble intermittently when on the over run downhill the gearbox comes out of gear and the engine cuts out and gearbox fault is displayed. Now when going down long hills and using the engine braking i put the gear selector in the 3 position.

There isn't any engine braking in D only in 1 and 2 as far as i know.

Better idea to fix the problem before the car lets you down:doh:
 
There is some Tony, at least until the torque convertor unlocks, same in third. In 1 and 2 the torque converter is forced to lock on the overrun.

Yeah but only in D above 50 mph. Unless there is something seriously wrong with mine.
