Running Rich

Hello all, i have a 300tdi and recently it's been smoking a bit on start up and also i notice that the exhaust smells very rich, if you know what i mean.... deos anyone have an idea, maybe it needs tuning etc..:doh: i have recently changed oils and filters.

i put in what was recommended 10w40 !!!

Black smoke or blue smoke?
Black smoke is normally over fuelling could be dirty injectors?
Blue smoke is burning oil check viscosity or bad seals?

It is niether it is more of a light grey smoke, and also the smell is not normal, very rich, i have worked with deisel motors for over twenty years but never been a mechanic. i know it isnt normal. so was just open for any possible causes. it seems to have got worse since changing oil approx 1 month ago.:doh:

Did you use an engine flush?
I used one in mine bad mistake as it can remove bits that were plugging holes
I ended up having head problems whcich I'm sure was as a result of engine flush. Mine was puttink out lots of white/grey smoke.
White smoke is a sign of water/coolant being burnt in system.

Hello and thanks for advice, I didnt do an engine flush as wasnt recommended like you say. Also i haven't lost a drop of water from the radiator system since ownng landy.. which is good.. i know to well about head's going etc, as i once owned one of them foriegn toyota things and had the unfortunate pleasure of having to have a new cylinder head. never again... Landy now through an through..i am going to get a friend of mine to take a look at it now i think, cause i know nothing about the workings of diesel engines.. once again many thanks.
