What is lumenition?

An aftermarket optical eyed electronic ignition system, probably the best of it kind.

Lumemition was the only aftermarket ignition system that pasted the army's testing spec and was fitted to small high speed army tanks powered by a Jaguar V12 which used a points controlled system as OEM fitment at the time.

There were hundreds of fitting kits for points controlled ignition systems, I personally fitted the system to Series LR's and V8 RRC's.

Thanks a lot. Very helpful. Can you tell me what this means in real terms i.e. this makes the car start and run better? As you can tell, being a total duffer at all things mechanical, for 'ignition' I see 'starting the car'.

One of these would be a good idea. There's plenty in it to give you some background knowledge, even if you don't intend doing any of it yourself;

Or ebay is a good place to get them cheaper.

This might also help;
Range Rovers

As for your question. Yes, they do offer potentially more reliable starting and smother running......but only if its replacing the early 'points' system on early RRC cars. If yours is a 4 door EFi model you have factory fitted electronic ignition anyways, so don't need to bother with Lumenition.
From your profile pic you've got an early RRC, so yeah Lumenition is a good idea.....or pinch a distributor out of a later RRC ;)

Hope this helps

point system been mechanical alters over time as points burn away,pad wears on dizzy shaft ,hard to set accurately etc luminition uses optical switch electronic uses magnetic pick up to create spark through amplifier ,so nothing to wear or loose its settings

In simple terms, Yes.

The spark voltage in a points based ignition system is between 15,000/18,000 volts, the Lumenition system produces about 25,000/28,000 volts because there are no points that have to close to produce an electrical circuit for the ignition coil.

Just dont get a belt of the HT side, it HURTS, I know.....

what all they said , plus its maintainace free - well till it goes wrong lol but thats not often unless its incorrectly fitted.

good bits of kit and its abragin yours came with it (I am guessing)

Thanks to all for great answers. God knows if I have Lumenition! At least I know what it is now and need to get it if I haven't. The car is a bit slow to start to be honest. Kind of winds itself up to start rather than sparking into life at the turn of the key. From what you've said, this smacks of dodgy points.

Set the points gap with a dwell (angle) meter not feeler gauges, clean the 8 pick up points in the distriubtor cap/rotor arm, check the cardon brush in the cap, inspect the HT leads/spark plug gaps and ignition timing.
