I'm not convinced it's a ringer, just an old 90 truck cab that has had an engine upgrade (as we all do) but he hasn't informed the DVLA. All he'd need to do is tell the DVLA the new engine code so that it can be adjusted on the log book but either way you look at it, it's still a 2.5 turbo diesel engine, so insurance wouldn't be effected. As for the petrol engine in the series you have been looking at. It would be alright as a bit of a play about, but it wouldn't really make for an ever day driver. What's to stop you selling that engine and dropping a newer one in? Generally speaking, if you like the look of the vehicle and it is all structurally and mechanically sound, then go for it. Consider an engine as an interchangeable unit. Its simple and straight forwards, so if it goes bang, it is relatively simple to replace. If your chassis is rotten or the bulkhead is covered in holes, you've got a much bigger job on your hands. If there's something that you decide you don't like, or if you fancy swapping the engine for example, parts can be swapped about or fettled to fit and in most cases at reasonable expense. When I bought my 1986 90 four years ago I loved it as it was. I soon got fed up with the engine, so swapped that and the bright gay yellow paint started to wear off not long after. Out came the roller and the brush and a tin of nato paint from ebay and hey presto, it looks the balls. You will always find something to do on it, and when there's nothing that needs doing you'll probably find yourself making work that doesn't need to be done, but that's all just in the nature of owning one, new or old.
