Ok as mentioned in my intro I have a few issues with my newlly aquired 2001 P38 (4.0 petrol)which I hope you guys may be able to shed a bit of light on for me.

So here are the major faults that I'll need to work through in the coming weeks.

1. BIG oil loss ie used 8l in 400 miles. No major amounts of smoke and only a minor (although irritating) drip, which seems to stop if car not used. Apparently crank seal has been recently replaced. No evidence of alot of oil sprayed under car.

2. car seems to be very dreich (sluggish). A friend plugged in his diagnostic thingy and came up with a knock sensor 2 fault. I have one due to arrive today. Is this likely to help? Which one is sensor 2?

3. There is always a select neutral fault showing on the dash. The car selects the low range fine but seems to be reluctant to come back to high unless engine is switched off. Also no kick down.

There are other bits and pieces, but if I can get your opinion on these for now (especially the oil loss) I'd be very gratefull.

Many Thanks

Stephen

2 litres every 100 miles is way over the top. It must be smoking like a steam train or leaking like the BP oil well. One thing is for sure, it isn't evaporating!! Get the car in the air and look for oil p**sing out with the engine running.

2. car seems to be very dreich (sluggish). A friend plugged in his diagnostic thingy and came up with a knock sensor 2 fault. I have one due to arrive today. Is this likely to help? Which one is sensor 2?

There are two sensors, mounted on the engine block behind the exhaust manifolds..one either side of the engine which serve each bank of cylinders.

Could be a dirty connection at the multi plug on the gearbox.

Virtually no smoke, my mechanic had it up on ramps and a negligable amount seen leaking from crank seal. Conviced its losing the oil when being driven but cant see where from.

Had a rough idea where they are just wondered which was No2 and it was likely that the fault would cause dramatic power loss;

Where is Multiplug situated o

3 its on the side of the gearbox, when you say loss of power, is it missing or you get backfires, when you put your food down..

A wee update- had a wee tinker today.

Firstly, fitted a knock sensor and got a bit of an improvement - deffinately a slight improvement in accelaration. The old one was totally open circuit and a bit melted.

Stripped and cleaned rocker breather hoses and althogh a bit of gunge, were clear enough. However, there was a wee "thingy" in the right hand breather outlet which I believe to be an oil trap. Yhis was pretty manky so gave it a good clean in the hope that it may have been somehow causing a pressure build up and contributing to my oil loss. Will monitor oil loss situation and report back

Next- cleaned MAF sensor - no discenable difference,

took off TPS and had a wee fiddle (checked for continuity between all 3 terminals which appeared to all be totally closed circuit between all 3 in any position of sensor. didnt think this was how it should be - thought perhaps should be a vairiable resistance). Started engine and checked for 5v supply, which was present.

put everything back together (thinking I ws going to have to order a new sensor) and adjusted throttle cable to take up slack, took it for a drive and WOW, what a difference. Goes like **** off a shovel (compared to how it was anyway) and kick down works. Dont know if I have disturbed a dodgy connection or somehow have reset an ecu by disconecting things, but not complaining.

The separator in the rocker cover can be removed and left out until you get a replacement, they are dirt cheap to buy. It may be advisable to remove the rocker covers and give them a good clean. Get a pair of rocker gaskets (Later rubber type) beforehand if you decide to do it.
