Freelander stereo and speaker upgrade.

Well I've got a few minor jobs to sort on my "new" 1.8 freelander, but one of my priorities is to upgrade the stereo and speakers as I love my music!

Anyone got any advice or links they care to share? I've fitted plenty of stereos before, but every new car brings new challenges, like what size speakers, what's the best way to get power routed from the battery etc.

I've got an Alpine stereo with built in Parrot bluetooth, some old but amazing sounding Infinity Kappa 2 way 6.5" components with an old Carlsbro amp and a new 12" sub, box and amp (can't remember the make, but they are a reasonable decent brand!) that I bought over a year ago but never got around to fitting to my car at the time.

There is already a Kenwood HU in place so hopefully it won't be too big a job to get the Alpine installed.

I did a search here and on google, but it doesn't seem that many freelander owners bother to upgrade the stereo much past changing the head unit.

Hi, i'd be interested to know as i've been thinking about changing the speakers to get a bit more clarity, i've kept the std head unit with a connects2 adapter for my mp3 player, its plumbed in through one of the blank switches for the heated seats (that i dont have)

I've a pair of 16.5cm JBL's in the front of mine, with a FLI 12" sub that i've built into my cubby hole in the boot, and made a grill to fit over it.

With a sony bluetooth stereo, i absolutely love my sound system in my landy.

Hi, bit of info if it helps... I've got a pioneer bluetooth head unit in mine, simple to get the landrover one out and its a standard single din so the new one went straight it. my front speakers and standard. but changed the back. got a pair of boston acoustics in the back, think there about 5.25 inch. they sound reasonable. As for getting a feed through from battery its not to bad. i found a gromit on the drivers side which popped out alowing a decent sized cable to be routed through. comes out in an obvious place in drivers foot well. a bit above acceleator peddle. not got a sub in mine but put a few 12v feeds in from battery for CB radio, inverter, aux 12v supply, etc.

ooow, by the way, my 5.25 inch back speakers didn't go straight it. the origional ones were slightly bigger so had to make a little plate up out of MDF.

Just been searching around in the loft room of our new house where everything was piled when we moved in trying to find my Alpine HU but can't find the damn thing!

But I did find the sub, box and amp though - they are SPL Dynamics - I heard they were good and got them off the internet at a bargain price - hope they are!

Freebiker, what do you mean by cubby hole? Do you mean the one in the floor of the boot? It doesn't seem very deep to allow a sub to drop in!

Can't wait to get started, just need to find this damn head unit!!!

Oh, and how easy are the front door cards to get off?

Well I found the Head unit, managed to get the old one out and happily there are std ISO connectors at the back - all I need to find now is the Bluetooth microphone and can get it installed in 10 mins. Hopefully.

After that I'll decide on the best way to get the speakers, amps and sub installed.

Well I got my Alpine HU with Bluetooth installed and it's working well. All I needed to buy was an aerial adapter. The Bluetooth microphone was pretty easy to feed through to mount on the driver's side A-pillar.

I'm off work next week and hopefully will get the sub fitted and then the component speakers in the front.

I did the same minus the sub because I need the boot space. My sound system is still **** compared to how it was in my old BMW 3 Series E46. (Stock sound system) Not sure why.

You can get pretty decent new speakers for not much money, so might not be worth loking for secondhand ones. I'd recommend JBL speakers being a decent budget choice, but any of the usual branded models if you shop around should be an improvement on the std speakers.

I've got a 56 plate freelander '1'. It's got the satellite navigation system, with a storage compartment underneath. I'm presuming both can be removed for a double din fitting

The Sat Nav is only a single din, but looks so dated. Hoping to get someone to fit additional cigarette lighters also in the rear of the armrest space and another in the boot. I couldn't believe it didn't have one in the boot!

Same one as i bought from halfords for £100, best value woofer on the market. I ditched the surround though as when driving my girl pretty hard, the box tended to get thrown to the other side of the boot with the wires ripped out the back.

I'd recommend it a lot.

The cage the goes over it is and wire basket from B&Q that i cut, bent into shape and sprayed. Then drilled a few holes in the plastic door for the cage to slot into with a bit of superglue in the holes first. Cage has enough clearance over the woofer and is pretty strong.

The JBL's along with a lot of other components don't like the bass too much, but are VERY good at handling the high notes.

I'd highly recommend a sub to go alongside them. JBL's only handing the mid-high tones sounds great with something else handling the lows.

Wouldnt mind trying this out myself, although it looks like you could fit two in the cubby hole space, but im trying to make my sound system better without turning it chavvy !

any ideas, i have allready changed my head unit, whats the actual sizes of the speakers in the FL doors ?

They are a 16cm speaker but have limited depth due to the window drop.

One problem is the mounting screws are not equidistant around the circumferance and the door skin pressing makes it difficult to fit ones with a round flange properly.

One of the key point for good car audio is the coupling between the speaker and its fixing. If this is not secure then it does not matter how much you pay for the speakers it will sound crap (to think I used to fix them to the door lining). Better results can be achieved with the standard speakers and lining the door skins with something like Dynamat or Stinger. Tweeters and a Sub mean that the standard speakers are only a small part of the audio quality setup anyway.

Mine has the HK system with the floor mounted sub as standard and with dog mats and boot liners is completely pointless. What I want to do is get a spare pair of side boot trims and set subs into either side using the wings as reverb capacity.
