Tyres rubbing.

Hi.
I took my discovery 300 tdi off-roading for the first time Sunday, and had a great day. I have got 235 70 r16 BFG mud terrain tyres on steel rims, and found the rear wings have cut in to the tyres. Somebody suggested replacing the springs (with new standard ones), but wasn’t sure if this is going to help? Any suggestions would be great.

it is catching much higher up inside the wheel arch? is there an easy way of stoppin the wheel goin up that high? i thinks it might b because the steels stick out further than the alloys did.

they are the standard size, i looked into that b4 i gt them, it says no mods needed.

get the arch extentions on fleabay around 130 there fitted abit higher so you can cut you arches higher giving you better wheel travel just remeber to repaint the arches lol

i have put steels on it, and they do seem to stick out further than the alloys did.

modulars and 8spokes have quite an offset and will cause your tyres to catch with the wide tyres, disco steels won't (the old 5spokes you can get for £10 each or less from a breaker)

check your bump stops are in place before you even think about changing wheels or anything drastic

same prob I had years ago when I fitted 235/70/16 muds to a Rangie on standard springs. Tyres were not rubbing onto the wheel arch lips, but were rubbing onto the top arch, where seat belts are anchored. Only happens on full articulation tho.

You can fix this by either

1) fit extended bump stop (will decrease articulation a little tho)

2) fit 1" suspension block under the spring seat & extended bump stop (so that springs are not compressed fully on full articulation)

3) fit +1" or +2" rear springs & extended bump stop

In case you do not know where the bump stop is, looked at your rear axle at approximately 6" inwards after the spring. You'll see a flat section on the axle, the bump stop is right above.

I ran 15x7 8 spokes for a while with 31x10.5 recip trial and only got a bit of panel bending/tyre cutting just below the rubbing strip at the back of the rear arch.

This was with a camel cut, 40mm lift block and stock bumpstops.

I'm suprised you are getting bad tub rub, usually it's the panels that get it first, usually the tubs are out of the way with small Tyres.

Something is wrong - this size of tyre on a std Disco I should not be rubbing.

I would checking/replacing your rear springs.

Thanks for all the replies. I have checked the bump stops and they look fine. Im sure its because the steels they are on are off set, the spare is sitting a good 2 or 3" away from the the rear door where the old spare sat alot closer. Think i will have to change the steels.

Everything is standard, i have just change the wheels n tyres.

The wider wheels are better, but obviously there is a trade off!

If you don't want to cut the arches then they're probably never gonna work!!
