Which is the better buy ?

First post and first Landrover! Have an estate at present and have been looking at the Freelanders and have decided to go for one.

Given a choice of the GS 58 plate, 8000 miles or a 56 plate HSE, 30000, both same price within a few pounds, which would be the best choice ? They are both approved dealer vehicles so will come with warranty etc.

Love the spec of the HSE, sun roof, satnav and heated seats etc - I do around 20000 miles a year so like my creature comforts. But can't decide ! Would hope to keep it a good while, unless the family expands and I need to go to a 7 seater, in which case the Discovery would be the choice.

Any thoughts appreciated, as I am a ditherer !

Have a search of the forum and in particular the Freelander faults poll. It'll give you some idea of what is likely to go wrong and what it'll cost to put right.

as redhand sez, look at the faults poll.

however, it seems most of the faults are mileage related rather than age, particularly for the age of vehicle you are talking about, so I'd go for the lower mileage one, although 30k isn't very high anyway.

however, you pays your money, you takes your choice...

Definitely the HSE (Includes cruise control as well!). How much are they?
The 22k miles difference is nothing if you are adding 20k a year. When you come to sell they will both be out of date cars and the 2 year gap will mean nothing but a buyer will go for the bells and whistles model at 100k miles rather than the 80k miles basic model. Which would you pick?

Will offer a bit less and also want them to throw in some roof rails for the price as will need a roofbox as the dog takes up nearly all the boot when he is in it (next time will have to get a chihuahua !) and covers everything in hair ...

Yes I did wonder if resale on a high mileage vehicle would be better on the HSE or the GS. Thank you

£20k for a gaylander. Fook me that can't be right?? could get a proper 4x4 for that money.

Buy an old one if you must have a freelander.

Seems a bit high to me, in April 2006 I bought a December 2003 (2004 model) TD4 auto SE with 22k miles from a main dealer for £14k. I assume you are getting an auto, they are rarer and dearer. You could buy a Freelander 2 for £19k ( I think) . In fact the more I think about it £19k seems an awful lot of money for a TD4 - hopefully an auto.
Don't offer a 'bit less', offer a lot less.

From the description, it is a Freelander 2, manual, not a 1. Arrives at the dealer on Saturday so can't see it till next week. The one with 8000 on the clock is their demonstrator.

That explains things.
Fancy this newsgroup covering two totally different cars with not a common part between them.
Good luck with the 2, hope you don't have bother with the steering rack which has been a source of trouble.

GS is 2 years newer so perhaps would be more attractive to sell on in the short term (assuming its the same price as the HSE) but if you keep the car for a long time until its not worth that much, go for the HSE

there is less to go wrong on the lower spec model, if you're keeping it long term then its something to consider.
