i think i might have a valve stem problem as it burns oil like fuel when its reved it smokes white /grey smoke could this be vale seals

isit possible to change the valve stem seals with the heads left on 4.6 v8 as i did change seals in the past on a 2.8 xr4x4 with the heads on by putting rope down the bores to keep the valves up.
