i looked in the auto leads catalogue and bought one of these harness adaptors Autoleads : Stereo Harness Adaptor for LAND ROVER DISCOVERY (1999-2004) BMW Round pins - i am absolutely rubbish with stereo install. this harness adaptor obviously didnt seem right, is this why i need a patch lead?
