i recently noticed a gear noise coming from the front end when turning (like a knocking noise) and experienced a knocking through the steering wheel. I've learnt the hard way as my diffs given up tonight whilst towing my boat. the front diff completely disengaged and i lost all drive, due to it being an open diff? so i managed to get it the 3 miles home gently in diff lock.
I'm very new to the land rover scene and now intend to keep an eye on all my fluid levels because i don't want it to happen again.
anyhow, i own a 2000 D2 TD5 manual. what oils and quantities do i need for the diffs, gearbox and transfer box?
also where are the filler caps for the gearbox and transfer box? i can only see the drain plugs.
what diff do i need to look for? do any of the diffs from the 200 or 300 fit? does the front diff comprise of 2 half shafts? if so is it worth changing the shafts at the same time?
the donut on the rear is also wearing, is it right that i can change this for a flanged 200tdi rear prop? which will in turn rid the stupid donut?
i also i have a knock from side to side on the rear axle, could this be that the 3 bushes/bearings in the watts linkage are worn?
any help would be much appreciated
my discos been awesome up to now
cheers
