Front axles on 1986 TDI300 - Some end float, not sure if normal?

Hi, Just took the front end axle circlips (1 each side) off, with the intent to repack bearings and tighten large nut due to a small amount of movement detected. Found I don't know what I did with my big socket last time I did it about 10 years ago, so no go on that one. But I did notice that...

1996 300tdi fuel stop solenoid power issue

Hi discool, I bypassed the immobiliser and now run the fuel solenoid from the ignition switch. So that issue is fixed. My immobiliser fob locks operates as it should, every time reliably. However, now when I push fob button, all doors lock, then a second later all doors unlock. Can anyone...

    Central locking problem

My TDI D1 immobiliser key fob locks doors and unlocks doors, as it should. However, now I push fob button, all doors lock, then a second later all doors unlock. It also has permanantly disconnected the fuel solenoid (but I bypassed that to get the engine working again). Can anyone explain why...

1996 300tdi fuel stop solenoid power issue

Thanks Discool and others. I see the 3 wires plug exactly as you say. I'm guessing the yellow wire is energised when the ignition is on. Thus, I can take a feed off the yellow wire and run it to the cut-off solenoid by the sound of it. I'll look at doing this (and add an in-line fuse)...

1996 300tdi fuel stop solenoid power issue

Engine cranks over perfectly. Solenoid works everytime when direct fed from battery and engine starts every time. Fault traced to: no voltage from wire on solenoid. No fuses blown. Does anyone have a copy of the wiring diagram so I can trace the black wire at the fuel solenoid back? Just...

    Heavy steering

Thanks everyone. I cannot imagine that adding some Dexron II would have a dramatic effect. Recently, The tensioner snapped off. The alternator lower bolt had snapped earlier and was allowing the alternator to flop up and down. This put extra stress on the tensioner, apparently, causing the stud...

    Heavy steering

My steering was fine. I topped the reservoir up (to the top) with Dexron II instead of Dexron III. Since then, I noticed that the steering was a little heavier than it used to be. No noises or any other problems. Maybe just a coincidence, maybe the pump is ultra sensitive? Maybe something is...

    Alternator bolts?

Thanks neilly and discool for confirmation that its a short M8 bolt that threads into the engine casing. I just hope the threads are still there. I'll take a range of lengths with me from 30 to about 50mm in case some of the front thread is no good. I ask all this because the vehicle is a long...

    Alternator bolts?

I've lost the bottom bolt that holds the alternator in place on my 300tdi Disco 1996 auto. It fell out without me noticing (I did hear some strange noises for a few weeks beforehand), the vibration of the alternator flopping up and down on the bad country roads caused my belt tensioner stud to...

discovery 300tdi immobiliser bypass, the easy way.

Hello, Whilst there are lots of forums on how to fix or bypass the immobiliser, I would like to make my contribution. My 300 tdi 1996 kept stopping for no good reason maybe 3 times a year?. I had tried rewiring bypasses etc, but it seems they keep changing the wiring diagrams from year to...

What are acceptable wear limits in power train

Gents, My drive flanges are good (new heavy duty), no slop. ''A'' frame ball joint new (adjustable). About to fit a new heavy duty donut (even though the existing seems fine). I can roll the vehicle back and forth 1" when handbrake off and in D. Bit of a soft click from rear, middle, and front...

What are acceptable wear limits in power train

Thanks gents. Greetings from Oz. Yes I do like them. They are very solid and one can actually work on them. I will try the two person rocking the car method to try and find the loudest klunk. Before I change oil, do you think its worth my taking the PTO plate off and having a look. Ed's...

Transfer case whine - 96 Auto Disco I

Wish we could hear more about what the outcome was? Pity the discussion just stopped short in 2004. My D1 1996 auto TDI has always had a whine when travelling at about 100km/hr and above. If accelerating no noise, if decelerating or neutral power I get noise. I hate it but what can you do ? Pay...

    Intermittantly dies

I found the problem. Its in the ignition switch somewhere. I just have to wobble it a lot when trying to restart.

What are acceptable wear limits in power train

Hello, There has been lots of discussions re investigating backlash in drive train components, but have not found any pass fail criteria advice. I have the same clunk some people complain about when the auto transmission catches up sometimes especially when braking down past 40km/hr. I took it...

    water methanol injection

As the idea is to get denser air into the engine, for short boosts of power the answer seems simple to me. Inject oxygen. You can fit a small industrial gas oxygen bottle somewhere. There's lots of room under my Discovery for small gas cylinders, the type used for oxy welding. Note: it might...

    Rubber Prop Shaft Doughnut......DEAD!!!

My 300tdi rubber donut after 300,000km is still working fine, and I have pushed everything to the limits with turbo and fuel pressure (and I drive it hard to 1.5bar at gear shifts). Sounds like its luck of the draw with these things failing, but one thing that is coming up time and again at...

    300Tdi Crankcase Ventilation Valve

Hello, I've had a think about this. I installed an atmospheric ventilated catch-can on the end of the cyclone filter but I think this may be a wrong move. With the factory set up, the air oil vapour was being sucked out of the rocker cover (neg pressure) via the engine air inlet and by...
