When I got mine I had to take it apart for similar reason. Found a parking ticket (from previous owner) had somehow slipped into the unit. Removed that and all worked fine. Just check for debris :-)

Have a look at busters guides. There is one in there on how to change the lock. Used that when doing mine and it went easy (after a few swear words and getting the wife to help as she has smaller hands :-) )
