The bearing where the near side drive shaft on our 2001 td4 manual freelander has excess play in it. Can you change this bearing without stripping the box out the car?

My wifes 2001 td4 freelander had an oil leak round the near side drive shaft which we never noticed till it was low in oil now there is a bearing grumbling. How can you tell if it is the main box or the transfer box without stripping the box out as I cant have the car off the road too long.
