The whole upgrade of a defender to abs was covered in 2 issues of Land Rover Monthly magazine recently, unless you have lots of knowledge and are willing to swap brake servo, master cylinder, add an abs module and ecu and all of the wiring it's not worth it.

Hi, I had the same issue, and ordered a replacement cable, however I found that the replacement cables had a different thread pitch and hence would not work with my original wheel boxes. Ended up replacing the whole lot...just a warning.

Does reverse gear have a baulk ring? I didn't think that reverse had a syncro. Anyway, ignoring that, from memory when I rebuilt my gearbox there are some adjustments/shims that you need to fit to the gear lever housing. 2 in total, 1 for 5th gear and 1 for reverse - these are spring loaded...

A definite MOT failure as it's right by the steering box mounting...and it does look really bad, generally to weld you need something to weld to!! But to answer your original question it can be repaired without taking the body off, but you will need to remove some bits, steering box, bumper...

not wishing to drag this thread on to long.... but is swapping a old turbo 2.5 diesel with a 200tdi a modification? my thoughts are that land rover actually sold kits to do so, and you are putting a land rover engine in and not say a perkins diesel or some jap engine, at very least get it...

Be careful to check that the bolts that fix the caliper are the same... I did the same swap and the bolts fitted ok (or so I thought) but a week or so later I almost crashed when the caliper came off !! I believe that there are 2 different bolts and they are almost the same but not exactly...

I have an issue with the pads in the front calipers that appear to be to small (narrow) and can then move back and forward (in line with the rotation of the disk), and hence cause a clicking noise. It also can cause a slight jerking motion as you apply the brakes....(if you know what I mean!!)

I have checked the turbo and there isn't any significant play...it just feels like the engine isn't spinning up even with your foot flat to the floor it struggles to reach 40, then all of a sudden it's all back to normal and off we go. Could something be sticking in the injector pump?
