About to buy a 2004 Freelander

I wish I hadnt posted that on Friday - I spent 8 hours yesterday either at the side of the M62 or in a flatbed truck or waiting for RAC. My car cut out on the outside lane of the motorway, loosing power steering and brake assist - not a nice experience! Bloody Audi - wish I'd took the FL now...

About to buy a 2004 Freelander

That may be but I stand by the fact that our Freelander has been a good car. To quantify, it replaced a bought new Fiat Grande Punto that had around 10 trips to the dealer in 18 months - thank god it was under warranty!. Before the Punto we had a MINI Cooper that was horrendously unreliable -...

About to buy a 2004 Freelander

I stopped coming in here after buying the Freelander due to the constant rubbishing and negativity. I really did think I had wasted my money and wished I had done some research before writing the cheque. I now know that you're either here to have a bit of banter and its a bit of fun taking...

About to buy a 2004 Freelander

We bought our 1.8 2004 SE nearly 2 years ago and had similar negativity before buying it - VCU's, headgaskets, windows, economy etc etc. I've taken it to the highlands of Scotland with 4 people, full boot and full roof box and it never missed a beat and got just over 30mpg. Overall we've...

    Black box under passenger dash?

It is part of the air conditioning unit - it is in a bit of a daft place but at least it keeps you cool :D

    IRD replacement / rebuid

I havent had the oil changed and as far as I am aware its never been changed - so wont bother then! I drove 15 miles yesterday at town speeds before it started to rattle under heavy load so its not instant but definately once everything is fully warmed up does it raise its ugly head! I am...

    IRD replacement / rebuid

As I have a very similar noise at the same revs, in the same gears at full load I am watching this hoping I find out everything is normal:D One question Russell - can you get yours to rattle from a cold startup - i.e. overnight? Mine wont until fully warm and the local garage recons changing...

    cam belt done when?

I believe it is every 72,000 miles or 6 years - which is slightly odd as my MG TF with a 1.8 K series is every 60,000 or 4 years and as far as I know the belts and ancillaries are the same!!

    engine revving on its own

It sounds like it might be a sticking throttle position sensor - not sure about the LR but expect its the same a MGR cars in that it can be reset quite easily - worth a try at least before moving onto something more tricky or expensive. Whilst the ignition is set on position 2 - fully press...

What MPG do you get from your Flander

We have not had the freelander long so brimmed it last Monday, courtesy of Tesco's 5p off a litre and have done 170 miles so far and brimmed again today. I squeezed 25 litres in so that works out at just over 31mpg. That has been a mix of 60% town driving/quick motorway hop and the rest sat...

    high miles

Engine wise I can vouch for their longlivity - I had the same engine in my Rover 75 that I ran to 225,000 miles. It was still perfectly reliable when I traded it in for my Audi A4. In many ways I wish I still had it as there was nothing at all wrong with it but I couldnt keep it due to my...

    Difficulty selecting 1st and Reverse

Im a bit concerned after reading that - I supposedly just had my clutch changed as it was so stiff to operate it was almost undriveable. Since it has returned from the garage the clutch bites a cm or so from the bottom of the pedal - although I can easily change gear on the move without having...

    Odd noise. IRD problem?

Clutch has been replaced - its like a different car, however the rattle is still there under load in 5th. I have pointed it out to the garage and going to see if it gets any worse - as it sounds exactly like a heat shield rattling, then I am hopeful that is what it is :D Will keep an eye on it!

    Odd noise. IRD problem?

No news! I am going to call them tomorrow for a progress update. I cant see how its going to take them 4 days to change a clutch and slave cylinder! I wouldnt normally be bothered but its my wifes Freelander (and mine when it goes wrong!!) and as I took it in I had to sign for their...

    Odd noise. IRD problem?

Nothing from the garage yet - they are due to give me the Freelander back on Monday so will let you know then - in the meantime I have a Citroen C2 to drive around in :( I dont have any whirring noises, just a rattle which sounds like a heatshield rattling and only under load. I could only...

    mechanical rattle in 5th gear

Mine does sound exactly like a loose heat shield - I hope it is something as simple! At least I am getting a new clutch fitted for the other problem anyway - I will mention to the garage whilst they have it on the ramps to check the heat shields for any cracks or loose fitting! Will get...

My V6I ES Auto is dead!

could it be something more simple and much cheaper like the thermostat housing- these can give trouble on the KV6 in a ZT and leak water onto the hot engine - or are there other symptons pointing to a gasket going?

    mechanical rattle in 5th gear

Just a quick update! Its going into the dealer on Wednesday for a new clutch to be fitted as the clutch pedal is very stiff and its becoming difficult to change gear. They think its related as the clutch plate is rattling under load and although its not slipping yet it rattles when you would...

    mechanical rattle in 5th gear

Its a 2004 1.8 SE - so the revs are quite low being a petrol. Its not an engine noise though, or at least I dont think it is as it only happens in 5th gear. My wife has done 100 miles over the last 2 days and she has not heard it but I have just taken it out and its still there - she...

    Odd noise. IRD problem?

Thanks for that - I am almost certain it is in 4wd mode but will get under the car tomorrow to check its all connected up. Its booked into the garage on Friday for them to investigate - I was hoping it might be clutch rattle or something as the clutch is very stiff as well - maybe two birds...
