Rough running/loss of power/Rattling engine sound

Well, try as I might, I was not able to keep up with the issues I was experiencing with my beloved Freebie. On the expressway the vehicle just stopped. After having it towed to a garage that deals expressly with Euro cars, I was informed the vehicle threw the timing belt (only 52k miles on it)...

    Rebuild engine and transmission

Thanks, Chromiumuk. I never realized a rebuild would be so potentially daunting. Does anyone know of a source for obtaining a rebuilt unit for this vehicle? I've searched and searched, and no company I've called seems to have them, and when I do find a used unit it has over 100k miles on it...

    Rebuild engine and transmission

In speaking with the owner of the shop where I have the car, there seems to be a ray of hope in the possibility of obtaining a used or rebuilt engine and dropping that in. Install is pricey: $1600US. But if I can find a rebuilt engine somewhere for around $3000, it would certainly be worth it...

    Rebuild engine and transmission

Yeah, it's looking mire and more like it's time yo look for something else. If it was 6 grand, I might decide to go with it. But I have a feeling it'll be much more. On top of that there may be other things down the pike I'll have to address.

    Rebuild engine and transmission

Sorry. NAS FL 1? I don't follow. I wish I had the skills to do that kind of work. I was hoping I could get a shop to do the rebuild of both the engine and tranny for maybe $6,000 or so. Even though that's probably more than or about the value of the car, I figure it'd serve me for another 100k...

    Rebuild engine and transmission

I'm in the US, where the diesel versions aren't available. I've heard here and from other sources that the diesel variants are much more reliable. I'd jump on one in a heartbeat if they were available. A 2002 petrol version here, with around 100k on the clock sells for about $7000. I figure...

    Rebuild engine and transmission

Thanks to Hippo and others for all the help. You guys are great. Considering the issues I've been having with my engine and auto, I'm thinking of rebuilding both, and avoid spending $30k+ on a new car. I've got almost 130,000 miles on my 2002. I figure I can do both jobs for about $6-7k...

Rough running/loss of power/Rattling engine sound

Thanks a lot for the tip. I'll check into it right now. Could you give me some particulars on the Rover 75 (year, engine size, model features, etc,) to enter a search on breakeryard.com? I'm in America, so not familiar with the series. Thanks.

Rough running/loss of power/Rattling engine sound

Ok. Turns out the missing was due, at least in part, to the fact that cylinder 3 is not firing. I switched the coils 3 and 5 and it's confirmed: ignition coil 3 is bad. I'll be ordering one first thing Monday, but I do know something's up with this plenum, too, due to the rattling. I'm getting...

Rough running/loss of power/Rattling engine sound

I've read some mention of a remanufactured assembly. Any thoughts on that?

Rough running/loss of power/Rattling engine sound

Question: does anyone know of a source for the manifold chamber by itself? It sounds like the chamber is the only affected part of the manifold, and prices I'm seeing for the entire assembly are between 500-800 BPS. I've searched on eBay and can't seem to locate the manifold chamber. Thanks again.

Rough running/loss of power/Rattling engine sound

Well, I've replaced the leads and found that one of the spark plug ends (#3, middle) showed evidence of being pretty fouled up. I do detect somewhat of a smoothing out of the engine, and there seems to be less missing than before, but I can tell all is not quite well yet. I'll be...

Rough running/loss of power/Rattling engine sound

Cool. I'll still keep it in mind then, if the leads don't change anything (that rattling sound is coming from somewhere). Do the ends of the leads come straight off the coil? I tried removing one. The spark plug end was no problem, I tried the other end and it is not budging. I dont want to...

Rough running/loss of power/Rattling engine sound

After listening to sound on videos posted on YouTube, I''m thinking my issue may not be in the manifold. But I am having some performance issues. So far I've replaced spark plugs, both oxygen sensors (before and after catalytic converter, air filter and MAF, with no change). The vehicle has...

Rough running/loss of power/Rattling engine sound

Thanks to Hippo and MarkWizard for the suggestions and advice in the "Stuck with Freelander..." thread. Rather than continuing to piggyback, i decided to start my own thread. I mentioned I was ordering a MAF unit to see if it fixes the problems. Well, I installed it and it made no...

    stuck with freelander problem

Wow! Thanks for that diagram. I've checked all I can to see the source of the noise, but I cannot figure this one out. As to the rough running issue, I've put in an order for a MAF. Really easy to install myself so I'll do that as soon as it comes in. I can't imagine that the noise I'm...

    stuck with freelander problem

The sound appears to be coming from the right side (driver's side on your side of the pond), but I can't tell if its upper or lower part of the engine. The red circled area seems to be the most likely location.
