Just tried it with a bottle with a decent sized hole in it and the pressure still made it fly off when I revved the engine... Swapped the bottle for an old bean can, should do the job. Looks like there's a hell of a lot of backpressure. :(

My temp gauge has been unresponsive since I had an engine change, so I'm assuming the bloke forgot to connect it. There's a loose green wire with a spade socket on the end on the near-side of the engine, is that it? I've looked in the Haines manual but can't see where that should be connected...
